The Captive Animals Protection Society (CAPS) is today calling for the seizure of the animals being kept in Circus Sydney, following the admission of a circus spokesperson (Mr.Jan Erik Brenner on Matt Cooper The Last Word Today FM) that a kangaroo escaped in Cork last weekend after children were allowed unsupervised access to its pen following one of its shows. The circus has since moved on to Wexford, effectively abandoning the kangaroo in Cork. The kangaroo, which remains at large, escaped when children left the gate open after going inside to pet the animal. On the Last Word programme, Mr Bernner admitted that children do have unsupervised access to animals after big top shows, and that the kangaroo escaped when the gate of its pen was left open by one of the visiting children read full story / add a comment

The prosecution in the case have begun in the last hour or so to make their closing arguments to the Jury. It is likely that the defense will make theirs before the end of the day. There is a very very small possibility of a verdict late today. Most likely scenario is that tomorrow will see a verdict in this trial. SUMMARY Kathy Kelly finally gave her evidence on Monday. She spoke quietly about the chilling effect of the sanctions that had been imposed on Iraq after the 1991 war, of the devastation caused to the country, the lack of water and electricity, the ilnesses and diseases, the lack of medical supplies due to veto, the deaths of over 500,000 children between ages 0 to 5, the deaths of 1.5 million Iraqis due to sanctions (a quarter of the estimated number of Holocaust victims), the fear of the people before the Shock and Awe blitz of March 2003, how she related her first-hand experiences to the defendants, her acquaintance with Denis Halliday who had resigned as Assistant Sec General of the UN because of his disagreement with the sanctions. Mr Halliday who was sitting in the court..was pointed out by Senior Counsel Brendan Nix She described in detail the photos she had brought from Iraq which became part of the defendants' shrine In a day of high drama, there were numerous objections raised, followed by interruption of evidence and jury retirements. read full story / add a comment |
