national / eu / press release Saturday September 19, 2009 18:32 by Patricia McKenna
Former MEP, Patricia McKenna has accussed the EU Commission head, Barroso of illegal interference in Irish referendum, she said "its conveniently opportune that less than two weeks before Irish people vote on the Lisbon treaty the Commission announces that it proposes to give €15m in aid to help former Dell computer workers find new jobs. , Barroso is head of the EU Institution that will gain most power if the treaty is ratified, he should stay out of the debate and respect the existing EU treaties until such time as they are changed”. He is abusing his position and this it quite unacceptable in a supposedly free and democratic society.” read full story / add a comment

I would like to respond to a number of Sinn Féin driven articles, letters and texts printed in the North Belfast News last week that included spurious claims against the Republican Network for Unity (RNU). The RNU is an Irish political pressure group with organised branches nationwide. We are not a political party and are not constituted as such. RNU subscribe to the 1916 Proclamation and the attainment of a 32 County Democratic Socialist Republic. Our goal is to promote and maintain core republican values and achieve our objectives by strengthening partnerships with strategically allied organisations, including Republican political parties, trade Unions, socialist and ex-prisoner groups. read full story / add a comment

The action was targeted against Dead Sea Spa, an Israeli cosmetics firm which has a stall in Jervis Centre in Dublin. The protest coincided with an international day of action against Israeli cosmetics companies, many of whom are based in illegal West Bank Settlements. read full story / add a comment

The Spanish state over recent months has intensified its campaign against Basque solidarity with the political prisoners but seems to have succeeded only in raising the profile of the prisoners and in further alienating Basques from the Spanish state. The campaign against the solidarity movement has combined judicial decrees, governmental action and police baton charges with the firing of rubber bullets while silence or misrepresentation has been the response of much of the media. read full story / add a comment

The 9 women who occupied arms company Raytheon's premises in Derry during the Israeli assault on Gaza are being "arraigned" before the court on Monday next, 21st Sept. While they tried to repeat what the Raytheon 9 men did and bring down the computer system, the heightened security meant that they did little damage. Nonetheless, the state is going after the women who were trying to stop war crimes while the war criminals walk free. Four men arrested as they demonstrated in support of the women are also in court on Monday. read full story / add a comment

On Saturday, 29th of August, members of Sinn Féin’s college cumainn from all across Ireland gathered in the Party’s Ard Oifig, Baile Átha Cliath in order to plan and build for the coming college year. The day was a mix of teambuilding, presentations and workshops intended to help forge a common identity as college cumainn, build relationships and exchange ideas which would better equip republican students in each campus. Workshops on Education, Finance, Public relations, Campaigns and Recruitment were run on a collective basis by those present – sharing views and ideas across Ireland from Universities, ITs and Colleges. The Uladh Colleges Comhairle Ceantair gave a presentation to the university cumainn from the other three provinces on the model which they have developed during the last year – showing the advantages of efficient communication between third level campuses and the pooling of resources in a particular geographic area. read full story / add a comment

The monthly peace vigil at Shannon on Sunday 13 Sept took place on a beautiful Indian Summer's day when nature seemed to be at peace with itself. However, a closer look inside the airport fence showed very few civilian planes, with Aer Lingus cut backs on Shannon services, Air France/CityJet about to abandon its Shannon Paris route, and Ryanair also planning schedule cutbacks. There was plenty of military activity however, with four warplanes surrounded by Gardai and Airport Police. read full story / add a comment
