Today 40 activists from Rising Tide, Rhythms of Resistance and other groups shut down a Shell petrol station in Islington, London in solidarity with the International Day of Action against Shell's onshore pipeline in County Mayo, Ireland. read full story / add a comment

Various survivors of the Bhopal Gas Leak and activist supporters, about 150 individuals, are embarking on a month long padayatra [protest march on foot] from Bhopal to Delhi, which is a distance of approx. 800km. They are setting out from the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal on 20th February and hope to reach New Delhi by the end of March. They will stop along the way in various other areas/communities that have been affected negatively by industrial pollution to share stories and establish connections. They will be walking 25-35 kilometers per day. When they arrive in Delhi there will be a big day of support and final walk to the Prime Minister's Office with various other groups from Delhi joining for the last leg to make their support for the demands of the campaigners clear. read full story / add a comment

The ongoing situation at the proposed Bellanaboy gas refinery site has become an environmental concern. No work is progressing on construction as agreed by Shell and their partners, with local observers maintaining a day to day vigil.

However, on-site visitors have been witness to a criminal display of arrogance and neglect regarding the condition of the site at present, and the aluminium contaminated surface/ground water running directly into the drinking water supply for the whole region.

Shell continue to drag their heels operating a new treatment system, which was admitted by John Egan (a Mayo man!?) on MidWest radio last Thursday (16/02/06) as not operational yet, and with no date set for installation completion. read full story / add a comment

In an effervescent glorious Spring day , Shell to Sea activists were out again after a long winter siesta on William st working towards Shell's Groundhog Day, where every turn they take with their new hatchet man, Loftus, will a nightmare/cul-de-sac revisited.
Besides the info table, the Statoil Service Station at Cemetery Cross roundabout was picketed, true to form, the bloody minded proprietor there called the Gardai (true to form, well humoured and genial) when, due to lack of numbers, we were'nt even blockading it.

The facade of a trial against the police ended in a not guilty verdict with little chance of their victims ever receiving compensation. As the verdict was read out this lunchtime the activists walked out of court shouting that they had had enough of this bullshit. The whitewashed trial of two police officers in Switzerland, acquitted of the charges of causing severe bodily harm. The two victims narrowly escaped with their lives after a police officer cut a climbing rope during a protest action against the G8 in Evian, France in 2003. Despite clear video evidence that the police officers had cut the rope the judge supported police impunity by ruling that they had made mistakes but that these were understandable in the context of the stress they were under!

Cork Harbour Alliance for a Safe Environment are determined to prevent the incinerators proposed for Ringaskiddy. Despite recent government attempts to impose incineration on communities all over the country, there is now a growing national awareness that this solution to our waste problems is sheer lunacy. Anti-incinerator and other environmentally motivated groups are now joining forces to send a clear and unambiguous message to the government: stop taking us for fools.

of a statoil garage on the way out of cork .
at five oclock the start of rush hour ,
also alot of horns ,smiles and raised fist ,from motorists all showing there support.

Berlusconi is more than a politician. He is a billionaire who has exploited weaknesses in the post war Italian constitution to extend unwarrented power in all directions. Put very simply he is a "product".
Regardless of what socio-economic class an italian comes from the "product" is still deftly targetted.
Regardless of whether or not the targetted consumer likes or dislikes Berlusconi, the brand name has been completely absorbed. On the shelves of Italian newsagents one can buy a book of anti-Berlusconi insults, compiled by his office published by his press. His emergence has been one of the most serious challenges against XXI century democracy in Europe yet. & fighting him thus meant the development of new and interesting tactics.

For the first time an opinion poll has placed Berlusconi slightly ahead of Prodi the same day that Berlusconi announces a fresh electoral pact with Alessandra Mussolini the direct descendent of the dictator. It is a sign of how he plays the "fascist" tradition in Italian culture. So I'd like to inform the readers whats going on & maybe encourage "italian interest" contributors to indymedia ireland to expand and clarify the themes touched -

For all they laugh, they are wrong. It is possible to see, during the past 25 years in at least this country, a movement towards a new settlement in politics. This movement has continued regardless of who has occupied which office, and regardless of what party has won which election. It is clear that the ruling class - or that loose coalition of politicians, bureaucrats, lawyers, educators, and media and business people who derive wealth and power and status from an enlarged and active state - wants an end of liberal democracy. The desired new settlement is one in which those at the top or with the right connections can enjoy the most fabulous wealth and status, and in which their enjoyment of these can never again be challenged from below. We, the ordinary people, are to be stripped of our constitutional rights - no freedom of speech, no personal or financial privacy, no procedural safeguards in the criminal law. We are to be taxed and regulated to what counts in our own culture as the edge of the breadline. This is on the one hand to provide incomes for clients of the ruling class, and on the other to deprive us of the leisure that might allow us to understand our situation, and of the confidence that might allow us to challenge it. In any event, every organ of the ruling class is at work on promoting ideologies of boundless submission to the new settlement. read full story / add a comment
