The Illusion of Balance Ah that wistful sense of balance so uncommon in the liberal media. In response to a letter sent to the Irish Times criticising Charles Krauthammer's mis-quotation, among other things, of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's remarks at the "World without Zionism" conference held in Tehran, the Irish Times printed a 'counter balance' of sizeable proportion. read full story / add a comment

Syttende mai (May 17th) is commemorated every year by Norwegians all around the world, to mark their country's achievement of independence. A parade was held this morning in Dublin, when many members of the Norwegian community carried their country's flag along Grafton Street. They were joined this year by members of the Shell to Sea campaign, who followed along behind with a section of Pipeline with PROPERTY OF STATOIL and NOT WANTED IN ROSSPORT printed on the side. John Monaghan of Shell to Sea said: "This year in Ireland May 17th was also marked by Shell to Sea activists who want to point out the absurd situation whereby the people of Ireland will benefit nothing from the Corrib gas field, while the people of Norway will see the profits invested in their schools, hospitals, roads and pensions." read full story / add a comment

I attended last nights vigil outside the cathedral. While there I got a copy of what appears to be a statement from the Afghan's probably released near the start of the occupation as it refers to 33 Afghans (this number rose to 41 within hours). As this doesn't seem to be online I've typed it in below - it certainly nails some of the lies being told and it is important that there words are circulated. I've also included a couple of photos from last night. read full story / add a comment

"Interference by the major powers for more than two decades has plunged Afghanistan into being one of the most violent and disturbed countries on Earth. First the Russians and then the CIA and Saudi Arabia and the rest intervened with their national interests in mind. Latterly, the CIA and Saudi Arabia called both the jihad and the horrific Taliban, which has been a major source of the instability and violence, into existence." read full story / add a comment

on the first of May, Evo Morales, president of Bolivia nationalised the "sub soil" hydro-carbon resources of his state with his now historic "supreme decree" 28,701. Since then he went with all the other South American state leaders to meet with the leaders of the EU, & talk about - trade, commerce, business, economics, industry, finance, wrangling, wheeling & dealing, rackets, cartels, merchandising, traffic (all under one category we call "Capitalism") & other stuff like, human rights, poverty, ecology (carnival dancers), migration & development. He got to stand next to Chirac for the family photo, and then went home, feeling more secure than in the last weeks, (the mafia didn't do the expected hit on him in Vienna --- what with Bertie Ahern watching ) and decided to issue another "supreme decree".... read full story / add a comment
