Today (Saturday) at noon a flotilla of sea kayaks reclaimed Glengad beach, Pollathomas, Co Mayo; the landfall site for Shell’s offshore pipeline. Members of the ‘Great Rebel Raft Regatta’ recently deployed at the E.ON coal fired power station at Kingsnorth in Kent, England, have made their way from Climate Camp UK to Erris, in order to assist Shell to Sea campaigners in their opposition to this pipeline construction at Glengad. The first wave of the Rebel Regatta arrived today following Marine & Public Information Notices which announced the arrival of the world’s largest pipe-laying vessel, the Solitaire, in Broadhaven Bay, anytime from today onwards. Captain Ahab of the Rebel Crew states, “It’s unacceptable what Shell are being allowed to get away with here in Mayo. We intend to plunder Shell’s compound at Glengad and board the Solitaire when she arrives in the bay. We take no prisoners. It’s the gang-plank for these boys. This environment needs protection from these marauders of Shell’s.” read full story / add a comment

Ogra Shinn Fein have produced a youth election broadcast for the upcoming by election in Enniskillen on Wednesday 17 September. The youth electon broadcast urges young people from the relevant electoral ward to come out and vote for Sinn Fein’s candidate Debbie Coyle and visualises the advances that Sinn Fein have made in recent times. It also includeds a number of short interviews with Mary Lou McDonald MEP and Fermanagh/South Tyrone MP Michelle Gildernew. My wife was pregnant with twins this time last year and it got me thinking about Avril Monaghan, the woman who died, pregnant with twins, in the Omagh bombing. This is a short piece that I wrote at the time, remembering that tragic day in general, and those hugely unfortunate twins in particular. The US puppet regime in Georgia thought it could retake S. Ossetia and Abkhazia. It underestimated the revival of Russian power. Now its US and Israeli military has been crushed and the regime is in tatters. This represents a change in world relations. Russia has now shown it is prepared to intervene militarily beyond its borders. This will mean that the russian minorities in the former Soviet republics will become much more assertive. this in turn will mean that the governments of these countries will have to pay more heed to Russia. And the sige of Bush only able to wring his hands in china while his boy was getting whipped in Georgia will strengthen all Anti uS forces worldwide. read full story / add a comment

Kathy Kelly founder of the sanctions busting group "Voices in the Wilderness" has been lifted on an old warrant during the 450 mile peace walk from her hometown of Chicago to St. Paul site of the forthcoming Republican Convention (where John McCain will be nominated as the party's Presidential candidate for November's U.S. Presidential elections). Kathy Kelly was a regular visitor to sanctions strangled Iraq and present in Baghdad during the U.S. "Shock & Awe" campaign 03. She had spoken at Afri's 03 Brigid Festival in Kildare en route to Baghdad and gave the PItstop Ploughshares photos of Iraq victims which were taken into the Shannon Airport hangar during their disarmament action the following weekend. During the next 2 weeks, the Solitaire (the biggest pipe laying ship in the world) is set to begin illegally constructing the offshore section of the pipeline. It is believed that the Solitaire is on a pretty tight schedule & booked up for the next 2 years, so ANY disruption provides us with a real opportunity to delay the project significantly. read full story / add a comment

Many areas have to be tackled in our efforts to end Greyhound racing in
Ireland. However none more vital than stopping the annual sports capital
grants from the Irish government. These have amounted to 105,000,000 euro
since 2001.As we are in a recession now surely Hospitals or the elderly
would be more deserving causes. Contacting and appealing to Bord na gCon to stop the slaughter and suffering of Greyhounds that is inherent in racing is like asking the butcher to become vegan, maybe harder. read full story / add a comment
