The following is the diary of Fr. Raymond Murray, Chaplain of Armagh's Prison and human rights defender of the political prisoners during the Troubles. He is also author of the book "State Violence -Northern Ireland 1969/1997" and numerous reports on torture in Northern Ireland with Fr. Denis Faul, such as "The Hooded Men". He agreed to travell on behalf of Grupo Raíces (Grúpa Fréamhacha) to share his experiences in Northern Ireland with the popular movement in Colombia. This article is an invitation for people that may know the answer to the following questions i have in relation to fee paying schools. I understand that the state pays the wages of teachers in fee paying schools while allowing them to also charge those parents who can afford it - fees. My understanding is that this is situation is an historical anomaly based on most fee paying schools being protestant at the creation of the state 90 odd years ago. The senders of the violence perpetrated on July 21, 2001 at the Diaz school in Genova during the G8summit were acquitted yesterday, after a long trial. No jail, no punishment at all for Giovanni Luperi, and for Francesco Gratteri, who ok-ed the massacre. Out of 29 defendants only 13 were sentenced. Shame on the system, shame on the government, shame on those who showed no courage. Our heart goes out to Carlo Giuliani's mother, to Mark Covell, who was at the trial yesterday, and visibly incredulous, to the victims of the beatings, the accusations, the humiliations. In Ennis district court today Thursday 13 November, Judge Mangan adjourned a charge of obstructing/impeding an airport fire officer, brought against the former UN peacekeeper and anti-torture campaigner, Edward Horgan, of Castletroy, Co. Limerick. Having heard that Horgan’s summons cited the wrong act and did not come as stated from the Director of Public Prosecutions, the case was adjourned to 8 January. Horgan went to the airport on 18 June 2008, on a tip-off that Learjet N54PA was due to arrive from Florida via Newfoundland. Flight logs showed that N54PA had landed several times, including 3 June 2008, at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. Horgan walked into the security office to demand that the aircraft be searched for prisoners, and its crew questioned about recent and past activities, and insisted on remaining while the plane was being refuelled in order to confirm whether Gardai searched the aircraft or not. read full story / add a comment

On the day that 1983 Long Kesh Escapee Pól Brennan will go to court in the USA to fight for his release, West Tyrone Ógra Shinn Féin have sent a message of solidarity and called for his “immediate freedom so that he can fight his deportation freely and fairly.” Pól Brennan has been imprisoned in US jails from January this year, because when he was stopped at a routine road block, his work permit had expired. Pól is not undocumented and has a work authorisation permit in the system since 2006, but he has neither received or been refused the permit. What began as a simple bureaucratic misunderstanding was soon escalated by the US Homeland Security who has also activated a deportation order for Pól. This completely ignores a US court ruling in 2000 which allowed Pól hearings for political asylum which are still ongoing. read full story / add a comment

On Monday 10 November US a US Air force executive jet, reg no 40109, a learjet 35 or a C 21A in military terminology, was being refuelled at Shannon airport, while being protected by a special garda escort. We dont yet know who the passengers were, but such luxuary transports are not for one star privates, they are normally reserved for one star generals and upwards. Some of these generals have been guilty of war crimes in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is most likely that the Gardai did not search the aircraft to ascertain if any war criminals were on board. read full story / add a comment
