The General Strike started on May 7th when unions called for a strike to increase the minimum wage from 300,000 Lebanese pounds to 960,000 due to inflation in food and fuel prices. That's an increase from $200 per month to just over $600 per month, the Government offered a mere $100 of an increase. It was then revealed that Hizbollah had their own telecommunications network and the government demanded that they shut it down. There was to be a big demonstartion for the 7th but there were rumours that pro government militia snipers were goung to attack the demonstration and protests at the airport road so the unions backed down. However the strike went ahead and the usually intensely manic streets were empty of traffic. read full story / add a comment

The following letter has been published in the Irish Times on 9th May 2008. This is a significant development, because the Gardai and the Irish Government authorities have clearly failed to carry out their duties towards prevention of the crimes of torture at Shannon airport. This however does not relieve the citizens of Ireland of their responsibilty to prevent torture. It is the moral and legal duty of all Irish citizens to take 'all neccessary means' to prevent the possible continuing use of Shannon airport by the CIA and the US military for the purpose of transporting prisoners for torture. read full story / add a comment

Last weekend, Belfast was graced with the presence of two strong Palestinian activists; George Rishmawi and Iyad Bornat (also spelled Eyad Burnat), the screening of Iyad's powerful documentary: Bil'in Against the Wall http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qy8-oxnZQJU in the Falls Road Cultural Center last Friday night and George's public address at the Belfast May Day Rally on Saturday. The documentary is a powerful indictment of Israel and its use of murderous violence by its Occupation Army in beleaguered Bil'in against peaceful protestors to snuff out dissent against the expropriation of Palestinian land for the building of "settlements" for Jews only colonists. Au fait with the action of the Raytheon 9 in Derry, George Rishmawi and Iyad Bornat, through the good offices of Kathleen O'Connell (IPSC) sought and found Eamonn McCann at the rally to express solidarity with the 9 and Pitstop Ploughshare success at their forthcoming trial. read full story / add a comment

Garda says that lots of people find anti-war banners offensive, and is looking for the least excuse to have them removed. Whatever about his illegitemate and unprofessional power-hungry bullying, this garda must have turned off his critical faculties regarding the offensive nature of illegal invasions and one million Iraqi dead. It seems the Irish state police would rather banish factual posters in a temporary vigil, than investigate what's on CIA and US Army flights going through Shannon Airport. read full story / add a comment

Public hospitals around the country scheduled to close under current Government plans have been named in the run up to a major health rally in Monaghan on Saturday, May 10th. These closures will lead to an American-style health system where access to medical treatment, including hospital emergency care, depends on ability to pay, warned Marie O’Connor Health Services Action Group PRO. If Monaghan General closes, HSE will press on to terminate over 40 other public hospitals, said Monaghan Community Alliance Chairperson Peadar McMahon. ‘Many are already marked DNR –– do not resuscitate.’ Speakers at the Monaghan rally include Joe Higgins of the Campaign for a Real Public Health Service, former MEP Patricia McKenna, Dr Illona Duffy, Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson and local TD, Caoimhghín O'Caoláin and Peadar McMahon, Chairperson of the Monaghan Community Alliance. read full story / add a comment |
