dublin / worker & community struggles and protests / news report Friday February 10, 2006 20:23 by Jim
Members of Crumlin Labour, Labour Youth and friends, family and supporters of Joanne Delaney protested today outside the Ashleaf Dunnes Stores in Crumlin. There was an excellent response from passers as well as extensive coverage from the corporate media including TV3 news and the major (non RTE) radio stations including INN and Newstalk. The protest lasted for an hour and was supported by local Labour Councillor Eric Byrne, Labour T.D. Mary Upton and Labour Leader Pat Rabbitte in addition to a large number of local residents and supporters of Joanne Delaney. There was no hassle at all with the shopping centre security and the protest moved indoors at a later stage to protest directly outside the Dunnes shop. read full story / add a comment

failure of the European Union to engage with the relatively moderate recent statement from Hamas, which suggested a role for the international community in the initiation of talks, which, taking as their starting point, the international legal position of the 1967 borders, and which could lead to recognition of the state of Israel by Hamas, is deeply disappointing - says Michael D.Higgins read full story / add a comment

McDonald’s workers in Queen St carried out a symbolic strike at lunchtime today despite the company’s threats to sue individual workers if they took part in union action. After the strike the company retracted their threat issued last night to sue any of their workers who went on strike today. The symbolic strike was in response to a number of Unite union members being rostered off by the company on Sunday February 12, when it was agreed the workers would be paid to go to a union stopwork meeting at the Town Hall. Joe Carolan, an irish socialist who is now the City Centre union organiser for Unite, organised support for strikers every step of the way today. He can be contacted in New Zealand for comment at solidarityjoe@yahoo.com or at 0066 27 445 4959 read full story / add a comment

Press release from the European Federation of Public Sector Unions outlining some of the dangers inherent in a proposed Bolkestein Directive "compromise" between the Socialist Group in the EU Parliament and the European People's Party. The terms of which would appear to bring most public services, for instance utilities, social services and water provision, under the remit of the directive. Perhaps someone from Labour could comment on whether there is substance to their analysis? read full story / add a comment

The attack on the prophet of Islam is condemned in its totality and the violence that ensued is also condemned. The mockery of the holocaust is equally condemned. We call on Muslims to end the violence immediately. We are hurt but we are not angry because the Prophet (pbuh) instructed us to control our anger. The strongest person is the one who can control his anger the Prophet is reported to have said. read full story / add a comment |
