For Immediate Publication. This is the second year that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s presence at the UN is causing a storm of international protests. Last year, it was primarily due to Neda Agha-Soltan’s murder in broad daylight at a Tehran protest and this year it is the Iran stoning case of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani. Last year, under public pressure, Ahmadinejad outrageously declared that Neda had been killed by protestors rather than the regime’s own security forces. This year, he has outrageously announced that Sakineh was never sentenced to death by stoning. The reason for his absurd claim is not that there is any truth in it but because of the massive international protest movement against stoning and executions in Iran led by the International Committee against Stoning and the International Committee against Execution. read full story / add a comment

Niall McNally SIPTU Organiser The recent announcement by Stormont Finance Minister Sammy Wilson, that the Assembly would need to make cuts of more than £2 billion is deeply worrying and must not be allowed to proceed. There must be united resistance against what can only be described as economic absurdity. We simply cannot allow a Tory government to impose cuts that may see the loss of up to 40,000 jobs. The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) today welcomed the findings of the UN Human Rights Council investigation into Israel’s attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla and called for the Irish Government to take action to sanction Israel over its illegal raid. The report found that Israel’s siege of Gaza is illegal and therefore the assault on the flotilla, which left nine people dead, was also illegal. Its findings also made clear that Israeli forces had unlawfully executed at least six people at sea, and used “extreme” and “unnecessary” violence against people – including Irish nationals - both at sea and in captivity. read full story / add a comment

Press Release, Monday 20th September 2010, 9pm The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) tonight welcomed a motion passed by Dublin City Council which condemned “the Israeli attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla’s aid mission that resulted in deaths and injuries of many of those attempting to bring much needed aid” to the besieged Gaza Strip and called for support for the Irish Ship To Gaza campaign and the Second Freedom Flotilla due to depart in late October. The motion further called on the Irish Government to review the purchases of military equipment from Israel, and to discontinue the EU’s preferential trade agreement with Israel. read full story / add a comment

Pyjama Girls isn't your typical commerical release. Its a film which deserves a space on Indymedia. Pyjama Girls, a new Irish documentary by Maya Derrington that examines the lives of two of Dublin’s ‘pyjama girls’, will screen at some of the country’s most prominent cinemas as part of a DIY distribution campaign. The film sold out its week-long run at Dublin’s IFI and was moved from the smallest to the largest screen after one day. IFI director Sarah Glennie says “the film attracted a new audience profile to the cinema – it’s pyjama mania!” read full story / add a comment |
