Members of the Catalan Solidarity:Ireland Committee gathered at ‘Free Derry Corner’ in Derry’s Bogside as part of a day of international solidarity action in conjunction with widespread protests and demonstrations throughout the Catalan Countries.

This year mark’s the 300th anniversary of the occupation of the Catalan Countries by the Spanish forces of occupation following the battle of Almansa in 1707.

During today’s solidarity action the Catalan flag (Estelada) was raised on Free Derry Wall as a symbolic gesture of solidarity to the Catalan people as part the ‘300 years of occupation- 300 years of resistance’ campaign.

As part of the event protesters wore white masks on which the Spanish Flag was placed over their mouths, symbolizing the continual denial of the rights such as self-determination and sovereignty of the Catalan people as a nation.

Following the event at Free Derry Corner protesters distributed information leaflets in Derry's city centre. read full story / add a comment

The Raytheon 9 appeared in court again this morning. Their lawyers got an indication that the state was ready to proceed. The earlier charge of 'aggravated burglary', a scheduled offence under the Terrorism Act, will not be pursued. Instead, the charges are those of 'affray', and two counts of 'criminal damage'. The case will be heard before a jury at the Crown Court in Derry, but not before the autumn.
The next stage is a Preliminary Enquiry, at which the Prosecution present the charges to be pursued and outline the evidence. This will be on Thursday 5 June 2007, at Bishop Street Courthouse in Derry.
The Derry Anti War Coalition is organising a mass rally outside the courthouse on that day, calling for the charges to be dropped and urge everyone to begin making plans to come to Derry for that day . read full story / add a comment

The Scariest thing in Derry this Halloween
“Last night I watched our city stagger out of the bars and clubs. Broken bottles and cut eyes. Girls in bright clothes taunting boys with gold rings. I stood there for hours listening as it turned blunt and angrily cast around for the wrong look or a flicker of fear to attack. It lingered to jeer at a girl boking against the wall of a bank and moved on. The whole street seemed to be lurching and scowling in sullen expectation....” read full story / add a comment

Sinn Féin Councillor Maeve McLaughlin has accused the University of Ulster of double standards after it emerged that the British Army and Royal Navy are to attend a careers fair on Magee Campus while political parties were banned from fresher’s day recently.

Councillor McLaughlin said,

“At the recent freshers day political parties were not allowed to have leaflet, elected representatives or emblems present. The reason given for this by the Pro Vice Chancellor was that they wanted to create a neutral political environment on the campus.

“The attendance of the British Army at a career fair in a city that has seen such outrages as Bloody Sunday carried out by elements within that army does not in any way lend to the creation of a neutral political environment.
