VIDEO: Police attack Student demo in Dublin 3rd November 2010

category dublin | education | news report author Thursday November 04, 2010 15:47author by Trade Union TVauthor email tradeuniontv at gmal dot com Report this post to the editors

No comment style video report from Student demo in Dublin yesterday.
img_1361student_demonstarion_against_fees_hike.jpg

Tens of thousands of students protested against the governments plans to double registration fees.

A group broke off from the main march and thousands followed and joined a loud angry protest at the Dail demanding to be let in, eggs bottles and Granny Smiths were thrown.

A group then occupied the Department of Finance on Merrion Row. Hundreds gathered there. The mood changed when a group of Gardai barged into the Department where it got very dangerous with a crush ensuing. Protesters and press did not panic which was key to limiting injuries. Anyone in the porch was thrown out. Gardai on horseback then went into the crowd. Shortly after riot vans pulled up nearby. Protesters were sitting on the ground between the horses and vans. The mounted Gardai reversed without warning onto the seated protesters. Hundreds were on a sit in front of the Department. The riot police moved in and pushed everyone back. One woman was brought out unconscious and thrown on the ground without the garda even checking if she was ok. How could an unconscious woman resist such treatment.

Watch the footage and make up your own mind.

Police continued to push remaining people down towards the Stephens Green Shopping centre continuing to threaten. One riot police gave my camera the whack of a baton without warning. One thing is for sure, the police force will not baton the press off the streets. It is a fundamental part of any democracy to have a free press.

The behavior of the Gardai was shocking, especially when that young woman was dropped on the
concrete footpath head first. This could have been a deadly assault, just like Ian Tomlinson in London
last year.

Why should a public servant be allowed to strike a member of the public with an iron bar.

I am afraid you may be right when you say the era of peaceful protest in Ireland is drawing to a close. It will take a while longer, but judging by the inability of the opposition(never mind the governors) to learn from their fuckups it looks like full steam ahead for a thirty-two county Ulster.

Everyone knows its broke, but no-one will face the fact its SYSTEMIC. Or if they do they are falling back on the nineteenth century ideological simplification of Marx and forgetting that while there is a bambino in that analysis, there is also a considerable tub of filthy bathwater.

We're strill trying to solve 21st century GLOBAL crises with nineteenth century NATIONAL reaction. The 1930s was the rehearsal(and after the collision of the WW ll contenders for imperial dominance an effort was made to establish global structures to avoid a recurrence).
That UN infrastructure has been sidelined by US unilateralism, and that the corporate state(central to fascist ultra-nationalist chauvenism)IS the New World Order is as plain as the irony-free Ireland Inc mantra long-swallowed and accepted by the indoctrinated and numerologically dazzled public.

Hard to be optimistic. Already the boneheads are (or is it more false-flag black ops?) chucking the geli round up above. Can't see beyond the green blinkers. Marry that to the hardware floating round the criminal opportunists and the blue-shirt agenda of Law&Order(their law, their order) is already sliding down the barrel.

Hope I'm rong. And I hope thats not a note of relish, Marcus, for belligerent confrontation. As yiou say, they do have the hatdware, training, and outside backup to ensure we dont stray to far from the axis Willy Brandt forecast in his 1980 North/South report. Prescient man.

You have joined a special group of honorable decent Irish people that have the courage to stand up against criminals.
Fianna Fail have for decades developed insidious ways and means to line their own pockets at the expense of the Irish people.
They know that some of their crimes are being discovered so have used their power to turn a once respected police force into criminals.

To smash a steel baton down on the head of sitting students that are not able to protect themselves is a crime.
It takes a special type of coward who knows that he is sanctioned by the corrupt state to do this.
Many people in Rossport have been assaulted by these so called keepers of the peace, then charged in the courts by the same criminals who have no problems in commiting another crime of perjury.
To be charged in court by these people is no disgrace to you but it is to them.
In spite of the media campaign to demonise the students more people are discovering who the real troublemakers are.
I hope that you will be strong , proud and justified in the fact that you had the right to protest and it was the Gardai commited the crime not you.

...because of their superior training and weapons.

TO those Guards reading, and those who were pleased by their actions, well done on this occasion. You can smile, and relax in the knowledge that those peaceful protestors haven't a hope against your power. You killed their stupid trust in democratic protections as they sat there with heads exposed to your shields and batons, and in doing so you probably did the future a favour. The era of peaceful protest in Ireland is drawing to a close.

In the meantime, enjoy your triumph.

And take care. Because you people just lost the war.

Hi Jonny,

Hope your doing ok.

There were a few people charged up here in Mayo with Section 6.

The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission has begun investigations into the Garda's policing of a student demonstration on Wednesday at which sections of protestors clashed violently with gardaí.

The ombudsman commission, which investigates complaints against gardaí, has received 10 complaints from members of the public about the Garda's tactics on the day.

Joe Higgins MEP of the Socialist Party today questioned the Garda's tactics.

"The use of Garda horses and dogs against student protestors in Dublin on Wednesday is an outrageous abuse of the right to protest. The intention was clearly to intimidate peaceful protestors and it is an utter scandal They should never again be used against protestors."
