Don't kill the Guga chicks !

category international | animal rights | other press author Tuesday October 28, 2008 15:02author by john and mary Report this post to the editors

Guga , young gannet chicks, are considered a delicacy by the villagers from Ness, on the Isle of Lewis .About this time every year boatloads of men from Ness sail thirty miles to the uninhabited island of Sula Sgeir, where thousands of gannets spend the summer nesting on cliff faces , to hunt /murder the young guga.
The animal rights group Advocates for Animals is trying to get the hunt banned in the European Court . The group’s campaign director Ross Minnet told the London Independent last Saturday "The brutal and totally unnecessary guga hunt belongs back in the dark ages and has no place in a modern, 21st-century Scotland. It belongs in the pages of history books.”

Almost as nauseating as the guga hunt itself , a Lewis poet, Donald S Murray , has written a book called The Guga Hunters in which he gives “an intimate portrayal” of the hunter/murderers whose story he claims has never been heard. Seemingly no poet will dare give voice to the strangled cry of the guga chicks.

I dont see how this is a big deal. Is it endangered or something? Otherwise its just hunting for food, I mean people eat millions of chickens every day.
