Peter Hitchens is right, says Joanna Gray: labelling a child as 'dyslexic' only means they give up trying to read. We think we're helping by giving them 'support' but all we've done is undermined their confidence.

US anti-war singer and satirist to play solidarity gig for Raytheon 9

The Raytheon 9 are nine Derry anti-war activists who carried out a direct action against the war on Lebanon by occuping the offices of the arms manufacturer Raytheon in Derry in 2006. Raytheon are missiles systems company that supply the Israeli armed forces and the Lebanese people had just suffered a murderous bombardment by US-backed Israeli forces.

The nine were due to go on trial in Derry Crown Court on 22 December but the case is now postponed till January 2008.

Solidarity is essential and this AWI is just that. Also, it should be good fun - Lippman is half-singer/half-CIA man (George Shrub). Check out the links below.

George Shrub, singing CIA agent and Cultural Director, Department of Homeland Security George Shrub has been traveling throughout his globalized domain, sharing his Point of View (the Right One) so that
people won't need their own. He employs anti-folk songs and
interventionary anthems to explain (and enforce) that the business of
America is none of your business, that unions are never civil, and
that the proper place for himself, like Wal-Mart, is everywhere.
DAVE LIPPMAN has been trying to keep up with his shadow, Shrub,
touring closely behind him. He continues to afflict the complacent,
occasionally rhyming in the process.
Dave has been known to take the air out of the windbags of the week,
de-distort history,
and rewrite the classics with parody and thrust.
He is the founder of the International Federation of Investigative Songwriters,
His hot topics include non-imperial Empires, non-free enterprise, and
non-elected Presidents.
Also the environment or the lack thereof, and unions or the lack thereof.

 "Lippman is a national treasure" - L.A. Herald-Examiner

 "Viciously funny" - Guardian (England)

"One of my favorite political satirists. This is a very funny man. - Erich Lee Preminger

"The Dean felt that more harm than good would come from your visit" - student, Skidmore College, New York

"God, that man can talk! What a great writer!" - Utah Phillips

 Some lyrics:

On the 8th day of Bushmas my President gave to me
 Drills for the Arctic
 Water filled with arsenic
 Oil won't mix with water
 But oil and government oughta
 In a centrifuge
Which he'll set up in a wildlife refuge
On the 9th day of Bushmas my President gave to me
 A - bill - of - rights!
Not for gays or blacks or free speech
 Not for none of these
 But for health insurance companies
 (Hokey Pokey:)
You put your right foot in, you take your business clout
Your put some PR spin and you shake it all about
You put them in the pokey and you pay a buck a day
 That's what it's all about
 (Home on the Range:)
Oh give me a plant And a good worker ant
And a dear little minimum wage
Where seldom is seen a unionized teen
And the kids hold their bladders all day

This should be a busy gig, so try to get there on time. Seomra Spraoi has room but it ain't the Helix! Might fill up very quickly, folks.

Because of the recent closure of Seomra Spraoi, detailed elsewhere on indymedia, and the shortage of a suitable new venue at short notice, the Dave Lippman show has had to be cancelled. AWI will make a donation to the Raytheon Nine in lieu of the funds it hoped to raise through the show.
