Health Crisis Debate

category limerick | miscellaneous | event notice author Friday July 06, 2007 11:48author by Limerick Socialist Youth - Socialist Youthauthor email socialistyouth at hotmail dot comauthor address Limerickauthor phone 086-8064801 Report this post to the editors

Socialist Youth -V- Young PDs

For the last few weeks new dialysis patients in Limerick have had to travel all the way to Kilkenny, Tullamore, Trallee and Galway in order to get treated. This involves a two hour drive there and another two hours back at least 3 times a week.

On Saturday the 21st of July there will be a debate in Limerick between Socialist Youth and the Young PDs. A key part of that debate will be the ongoing health crisis nationally, the dialysis crisis here in Limerick and the governments ‘co-location’ and privatisation plans.

Cian Prendiville a member of Socialist Youth said “This crisis in Limerick shows the true causes of the wider health care crisis: a chronic lack of facilities, staff and investment by this government”.

As well as this there is an ongoing problem with A&E, waiting lists and people having to stay on trolleys. Socialist Youth have recently been out campaigning in Limerick attacking what they called “PD Syndrome”. This, there material stated, was “stealth privatisation and for-profit health care”.

Add to this the fact that Socialist Youth want a comprehensive public health service and oppose co-location whilst the Young PDs are in favour of co-location and private health care. It promises to be an interesting debate!

The debate is on at 1pm upstairs in Riddlers bar on Sarsfield St and is part of ‘RESISTANCE’, a forum for young people being hosted by Socialist Youth.

Previously I had been a supporter of co-location because my dad told me it would help him cut down on petrol consumption which as we all (including you lot even) should know is linked to global warming and changing weather patterns. I was one of the 110 people reported by the BBC who got into difficulty yesterday one mile off the Irish coast. It was a horrile and traumatic ordeal. I lost consciousness and didn't notice my name tag get soggy and peel off my life-jacket & awoke to find myself in a bus being transported to a public wing of a public hospital. I tried my best to cry out and protest but the cold had numbed my tongue and my teeth chattered like a hyper Oxyegen raver on novacaine charlie substitute & the rescue team of protestants from the RNLI in Howth really bear a grudge and mistook me for a being a non-white child. I'm sure I picked something up. Accent perhaps.
I feel like a freak. I will never go into the water again and spent the night dreaming of rope and figure of eight knots. I have never left a comment before- Consider this a cry for help. I hope you poor people overcome whatever obstacle it is that stops you having enough money to afford dialysis. I really don't understand it though. If you can afford money for the off-license surely you can give up chocolate and cream cakes.
