Eugyppius wonders at the irony of a Green Party member's progressive ideals clashing with the reality of mass migration, as a tiny Bavarian village faces a proposed migrant housing facility that would shatter its peace.

Rossport resident John Monaghan speaks on the struggle to send Shell To Sea

category national | anti-capitalism | news report author Tuesday February 27, 2007 20:23author by w. - wsmauthor email improvemyself at hotmail dot com Report this post to the editors

"We have to win this for the whole of the country"

John Monaghan is a resident of Rossport county Mayo and part of the Shell To Sea campaign. Shell's pipeline, if it were built, would be located less than 70m from his home. Here he speaks about how the jailing of his father in law Micheál Ó Seighin drew him into the campaign and how the struggle against Shell has raised greater national questions for him about local democracy and control of natural resources.

"Every problem we are facing in this country right now, like the health crisis...seems to be a lack of money, and we are giving this natural resource away when we should be developing it for the good of the country."

John also discusses last fridays direct action, which stopped work at the refinery site for the first time since it began last October, and how the campaign can move on from here.

JM calling Dr Crowley a "Pet TD"
in a interview with Leona Nally "before" the 16/02/07
In John Monaghan's interview with the Maynooth Advocate when asked
"Are there any plans to use the general election, put politicians under pressure, etc? "For sure, we have our high profile 'pet TD', Joe Cowley who has supported Shell to Sea", Monaghan replies. "They're stealing our natural resources, so it is a national issue, but our focus at the moment is local."
I think calling Dr Crowley a "pet TD" was inexcusable, Dr Crowley has been very vocal on behalf of the residents of erris on this conflict.
Without his contrubitions in the dail S2S would have close to no explicit political backing!

Which do you think annoys Cowley more? People who call him a "pet TD", or people who can't be bothered getting his name right?

Apologies to anyone who may have taken offence at the "pet TD" quote. Dr Cowley's name is constantly mis-quoted which gets on everyone's nerves down here, but no disrespect was intended at the Maynooth talk.

It was a well attended night where the video footage of the November 10th baton charge was shown. To counter the oppressive nature of images of Garda violence a generally good humoured discussion followed, including the above quote and even lines from "Braveheart", and it's success was reflected in several in attendance travelling to Mayo for February 16th.

If you don't have a laugh now and again (especially at yourself) then you're not fully alive... that's why I wear the hat!
