Shell to Sea Picket on Munster Garda HQ

category cork | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Friday November 17, 2006 11:37author by Cork Shell to Sea supporter - S2S Cork Report this post to the editors

Cork Shell to Sea members this morning placed a picket on the Munster Headquarters of the Garda Siochána in protest against garda brutality against peaceful protesters in Co. Mayo opposing the location of the Corrib Gas refinery and pipeline.

The group of around fifteen protesters mounted the picket on Anglesea Street Garda Station which is not only the headquarters of the Cork City division, but for the whole of Munster and an Assistant Garda Commissioner is based at the station.

A letter of protest was handed in at the public office of the garda station and a receipt for it was issued.

There was solid support from the general public as they made their way to work / school / college and at one stage there was sustained honking of car horns which caused some laughter among gardai inside.

The group would like to thank one kind member of the public who arrived with coffee, fruit juice and other refreshments for the protesters, having forked out €27.00 euro in a nearby juice bar.

The protest received considerable media coverage with the two major radio stations 96FM and Red FM giving it prominence in their early news bulletins. Three of the group were interviewed and are expected to be on the 11am news on 96fm and County Sound 103FM. (www.96fm.ie)
