Friday 5th May seen Omagh PSNI base as the scene of the latest leg of Sinn Féin's ‘End Political Policing’ campaign. Ógra Shinn Fein had organised the protest to call for an End to the political nature of policing in the north of Ireland.
Shortly after 7:30 a large number of Republicans lined the Gortin Rd with posters stating ‘Political Policing -democracy under attack’. Many of the Sinn Féins Omagh district council team, numbering 10 were in attendance. Also present at the protest were a number of Sinn Féin and Ógra Shinn Féin activists who have found themselves at the centre of political policing in recent months. The protestors remained outside the PSNI base for just under an hour and dispersed shortly after the conclusion of the protest at 8:15pm.
Speaking after the protest an Ógra Shinn Féin spokesperson who organised the protest said:
“We are demanding an immediate end to the policy of political policing in the north of Ireland. The PSNI is being used to block political progress. One of the many reasons why they are engaged in this campaign is to stunt the growth of Irish republicanism. Far from this is our strength has grown and will continue to do so. We call for an end of this policy and as long as it remains in place we will be to the forefront in opposing it.”
