in 2005 the judges of Italy donned black hoods in protest at the inability of their judicial system to bring Berlusconi to trial.
You may not "clean the system from within".
Its too late. So now whatevr reasons given to "vote in mr B yet again", the analysis of future is pretty certain - You're either going openly post fascist id B. is elected and the constitution is finally changed to give him supreme executive power or yes, you're going to get "armed struggle" problems again becuase a generation of the most marginalised simply don't give a shit anymore. Use the word "s-c-u-m" less and analyse your future more.

I'd save Italy first - if I was proud of it.
Berlusconi is undermining democracy by injecting it once again with the cynicism which has plagued our country since WW2 - the influence of the underworld Mafia behind the scenes, the corrupt links between business and the Mafia and business and politics and the failure to face up the Fascist past under Mussolini.
The Vatican continues to subvert secular democracy in ways that could not be possible in other European countries including Ireland.
Meanwhile the Communist conspiracy has always been brewing - during the Soviet Era - radical students and low life criminals formed the Red Brigades and tried to overthrow Italian democracy.
Throughout the past 60 years Italian democracy has always been fragile - fighting these insidious forces of the Right and the Left.
I am a middle of the road Italian Republican - I believe in the rule of law - uncorrupted judges untainted by political allegiences - i support parties which promote liberal capitalism not protectionist cabals or socialist utopian nightmares.
Berlusconi is undeniably a crook - but his economic policies have benefitted most Italians though corruption has trived.
However his political opponents advocate socialism and other backward policies.
Berlusconi so far is the best of a bad lot.
The system should not be overthrown by fascists and so-called anti-fascists - rather it must be allowed to clean itself.
Italy has 2 general sides for the simplistic. One is proud of its fascist tradition, and has been represented in government in coalition with Berlusconi and hopes to be again. Its a tradition which goes beyond mere youth sub-cultures, garage-bands, skinheads or posters. It is a belief system and indentity structure which has thrived in recent years. It is also very well represented in the Italian police. If we are to attempt any analysis of "post-fascism" on continental Europe in the XXI century, we must study what has happened to those ideas, and memories in Italy. It then assists us understand what is going to happen in Eastern European states in the next 8 years.
The Italian police is a paramilitary structure, and time and time again has been found to give careers and uniforms and weaponry to fascists. That is why the illegal flag of the nazi puppet "Lago republic" was seen to have been used to decorate the barracks in Iraq when the Italian police contingent to the "coalition of the willing" were object of an attack by the insurgency. The photo first published here http://italy.indymedia.org/news/2003/11/433452.php is also reproduced here - http://indymedia.ie/article/69952?&condense_comments=fa...08617
The other side of Italian society is the socialist, communist, progressive and truly republican tradition.
Since the liberation period 1944-1945, the end of Mussolini's regime and the Lago republic and the american sponsered creation of the Italian republic's constition, that side of Italian society has been steadily marginalised and extrocised. We may began that history with the statement of Pope pius Xii excommunication active members of the ICP and damning all who voted for marxists in the post war election. In most recent years, as Italy has enjoyed a place at the G8 table of the world's most industrialised and developed states, she has also taken first position in child poverty, child workers, and seen a generation forced to leave in search of work at best, or in aviodance of compulsory military service at worst. Europe and especially London has proved inhospitable home to a generation of Italy's poorest young. Burlosconi came to power in 1995. Since then, the unitary state of Italy has almost been divided many times. Since then the poor young of Italy have flocked to London, where most have been unable to find jobs and with limited language skills have many become trapped in the worst nightmares of very unsalubrious squat and very hard drugs. It is unsurprising that of the non-Britons arrested for offences relating to the RTS! events in London in the 90s most were Italian. They had carried their anger to the streets of England. & they are still angry. & the Italian state and those who mis-govern her, those who are not fit to rule her, continously manipulate that anger. So I'd like to respond to the previous commentator, be they italian or not, that the real scum are not those on the street.
we have so many links on Italy & her problems. We call her number one problem Berlusconi.
