Percy Podger prsently imprisoned for 90 days for nonviolent anti-roads direct action!
CURRAGH farmer Percy Podger is planning to go on hunger strike in Mountjoy Prison - to help protect his sheep. Mr Podger (46), from Frenchfurze, was jailed on Sunday for refusing to pay court expenses of €850 from a case that originated with him hanging the entrails of a dead sheep from a road sign in 2004.
He is refusing to pay the expenses until a plan to install sheep grids and traffic-calming measures on the Curragh is put in place. If the expenses are not paid, he will serve a 90-day term, and he is also planning to go on hunger strike.
But Kildare County Council said yesterday (Tuesday) that the measures would cost at least •1m and that they would not be able to fund such work. Sean English, director of the Friends of the Curragh Environment Ltd, said there was “no way” the work would cost so much.
