'Hill of Tara Art Competition' Launched At Holy Faith Convent School, Glasnevin

An art competition for first and second level students was launched at 10.00am, 3rd December, 2004, at the St. Mary's (Holy Faith Convent) School, Glasnevin, County Dublin.

Students are invited to draw, paint or write a special piece, in response to the proposal to put the M3 motorway through the Tara / Skryne Valley.

Themes can also be based on the rich tradition of myths and legends associated with Tara (The Salmon of Knowledge, Etain and Midir, Nuada, Cú Chulainn) or whatever the artist deems appropriate.

The age-groups are: 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, 13-15 and 16-18. There will be prizes for First, Second and Third places, as well as five Runners Up, in each category. The Grand Prize will include a balloon ride over Tara.

Switzerland suffers many of the same problems in adjusting to the XXI century as the Irish do like:- building good relations between catholics and protestants, rearing cows, tending to sub atomic particle acellerators, being neutral, inventing the internet and remaining humble with it.

The Swiss have joined several "issues" together in the last month-

Eco-travel - low income work - Asylum seeking

The idea was the brainchild of the EWZ, the city of Zurich’s electricity supplier, which wanted to promote e-bikes (a new type of electrical machine made by Biketec in Kirchberg. with a rechargeable battery and solar panel which power the bike’s motor. They travel at speeds of up to 35km/h.) (that's about 20 of your Irish miles)

at the same time as providing work for asylum applicants. Migros, Switzerland’s largest food retailer, agreed to help sponsor the six-month project. The company’s hold on the food retail market has been increasingly challenged in recent years, and the chain was looking for new ways of satisfying its customers.

The couriers were found by the employment agency Züri rollt, which was set up to provide useful work for people given refuge in Switzerland during the Bosnian war. (A terrible war everyone was against it, you sent some of your Irish gardaí and wrote letters)

Edo Trikvesa, the agency representative in charge of the Migros team, is himself a fugitive from the Balkans conflict.

He says asylum seekers awaiting a decision on their case are restricted in the type of jobs they are allowed to pursue. (unlike in Ireland)

They can seek employment in domestic services, bar work or catering, or as builders but most professions are out of bounds.

Elvir Isakovic, who is 25, is a trained mechanic but he cannot pursue his trade unless his asylum application is accepted. In the meantime he works one day a week for Züri rollt, topping up his social benefits with a motivational payment of SFr400 ($337) (approx 350 of your Irish €uros) per month.

Trikvesa told us, "Working for our organisation gives asylum seekers meaningful work and provides a structure to the day."
