Plane stoppers Protest gig- A Sucess

Report of 'PLANE STOPPERS GIG' in Mother Red Caps ,Tuesday 27th July

A big thank you to all who came out last tuesday night to support the benefit gig for Mary Kelly in Mother Red Caps. You may not be aware that the Irish State which is in the process of re-trying this nurse, for stopping a Us military plane in Shannon,(after a failed attempt last year),are not allowing adequate resources to properly defend this case the way it needs to be.

With very short notice 'Fairview Against The War' put on a benefit which turned out to be a very entertaining and sucessful night, and as such this event was the first in a series of gigs leading up to the re-trial in October, to build support for Mary and 'direct action' as a tactic in itself.

The highlight of the evening was when Mary Kelly took the stage and pionted out in plain english what she has been 'accused' of. And by all accounts it seems rediculous that anyone could be criminally charged with attempting to save lives, though it makes perfect sense when you take into account that the Irish State supported this kind of killing on massive scale which Kelly was trying to avert, by allowing our civilian airport to transport 246,448 armed troops, napalm, cluster bombs and Depleted Uranium munitions through Shannon up to last March.

A great evening was had by all. There was a wonderful energy in the room meeting old faces and some new ones. The entertainment was superb, the highlight for me being Marty Melligan from Mullingar. I had heard of him from some friends and if you ever saw passion and anger, refreshingly bursting through your daily grind, to give you a sense of purpose you might recognise Marty Melligan the poet. Utter mayhem in words making perfect sense. His words, a collective sledgehammer plying his trade to our ears.......a fantastic night.

Look out for the next
'Plane Stoppers Protest Gig' .
Slainte....

Shouldn't it be plane stopper, singular?

Didn't Ms. Kelly act alone?

As for a gathering of perhaps 40 people (most of whom appeared rather bored by Ms. Kellys nearly hour long meandering waffle of a speech)in a city of over a million, hardly a ringing endorsement of her actions by the populance, and then of course there were those other plane stoppers who were conspicious by their abscence!!!
Seems it's not only the U.S Ms. Kelly is at loggerheads with, theres her lawyers, fellow activists, other NVDA plane stoppers!!!

If you insist on posting news stories at least try to keep them within some distance of the facts!

aaah... please quit the attempt to divide when there's no need or purpose!

I could only spend a few moment there, had to have meetings downstairs after paying my dues upstairs. But it sounded great and pretty decent turn out for Dublin summer standards - many are out of town, on vacation and so on. So the turn out wasn't that bad.

I hope MK's team raised some good amount of cash, but even so, its about community and struggling together - not slagging each other.

Hang in there Mary! You did what others never had the guts to do (including myself) :-)

The 's' at the end of plane stoppers does not refer to anything being plural. Athletes foot is not refering to two athlets... is it?,ah mabey its the two feet...
Even your insults are laughable. Your powers of observation 'observer', are as poor as your ability to comprehend simple english.

who would be at a gathering who so distasted people like mary k and then would post it here?

author by Observerpublication date Sat Jul 31, 2004 02:11author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Dube...obviously an observer would be there!

obvious..i think that you will find that Athletes' foot is the correct manner in english - that is to say the foot of the athlete, nothing to do with singular or plural!! Some study of the language might be advisable, lest you continue to show your ignorance by spouting from an obviously uneducated point of view!

Oh and there were only about 40 people there, M.K did rabbit on and on and on and she has fallen out with just about everybody she has come into contact with, including the people who would have made the plural in plane stoppers justified.

and the truth shall set you free!!!!!!

Best to sort this out now before it gets nasty and people start coujugating their verbs.

Apostrophes are used to indicate possession by a noun (person, animal, place or thing) followed by an 's':
For example...

the child's ball

the woman's hammer

If a plural noun (more than one person etc.) ends in s, add an apostrophe only.

For example...

the speakers' notes, the Tigers' cages

The title read Plane Stoppers Protest Gig (without an apostrophe)

Plane Stoppers' Protest Gig is plural. Plane Stopper's Protest Gig is singular.

As the man (can't remember his name) from the Evening Press once said "A man who can misplace an apostrophe is capable of anything."

Anyhoo, utmost respect for M.K. and indeed anyone who has the bravery to disarm, disable or just plain ole hammer away on a war plane. What they do with their apostrophe is their business.

They may be grammatically incorrect but they are morally right.

I spotted Damien Moran of Pit Stop Ploughshares at gig so 2 stoppers present. Another of their crew lives in Sligo, another is in Australia visiting his parents. Summer is a bummer when it comes to mobilising any kind of constiuency.

Once again thanks to all who showed up and supported the gig of which there will be another and another... so there will be plenty more nights to support this great cause.

While I do support what mary Kelly has done,I dont think it is bias of me to state that the highlight of the evening was when Mrs. Kelly addressed the crowd and stated her case. The applause spoke for itself...........repeatedly.
The next 'plane stoppers' gig' looks like it could be set for the 2nd of september. Once again all are welcome and many thanks for all the support. The next one will be even better
Wether you support this action or not please make your posts relevant and to the point.

Today in Basra alone, there are more than 600 children who have lost limbs since president Bush declared an end to hostilities in Iraq. They were blown off by cluster bombs left unexploded. There are between 250,000 and 600,000 unexploded cluster type devices unaccounted for, which children inadvertantly will find in the future. The war is not over for Iraqs children, it has barely begun. If stopping this plane MIGHT have saved even a limb let alone life, then it is worth it.

I hate left wing fascists and their fucking lies. You hate the fact that Iraqis are now free from an odious dictatorship. Keep holding your pathetic underattended concerts in support of so-called planestoppers who in reality are simply anti-american bigots. The left today are truly the new reactionaries.

No one in there right minds hates the removal of a dictator. Our problem is that we belive the dictate of capital removed this sadman bloke, thus forceing the workers of Iraq to bow to a new master, the tyrannt of Capitalism.
The so-called Iraq's are in no way more free now than before. Admitadley they may not be as tortured under capitalism as sadman, but thats only due to the unnesessaryness of it, and the fact the USA looked bad when it tried it.

You talk of lies, what lies. I for one am not a left wing facist,in fact no one I personally know is a left wing facist.
Left wing/right wing... what has your rant got to do with anyone opposed to us and uk soldiers installing chaos to extract oil ,and not freedom ,as you so naievely still believe.

killing 7.5 times more Iraqi civilians (if including sanctions) looking for nonexistent wmd, than were ever actually killed by wmd (including Hiroshima/Naggasaki) , is what I oppose.
I think the one thing which is 'unfuckingbelievable ' is your belief that Iraqi's are now free. They are of course free of Sadam. You may suffer from watching to much skynews.
The people whomb I know who have recently been to Iraq have said that the occupation is a complete disaster from an economic perspective.
Bush promised that oil would be 25 dollars a barrel now, it's almost double, hows that for success. More than 40,000 Iraqia killed and Sadam taken without a single shot fired.
Good luck in your journey.
