Increase in Racist Incidents: NCCRI Racist Incidents Reporting Procedure

category national | crime and justice | press release author Friday April 30, 2004 16:44author by NCCRIauthor address National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism, 20 Harcourt Street, Dublin 2 Report this post to the editors

The NCCRI has witnessed an increase in the number of racist incidents
being reported to its office in recent weeks.

In light of this increase we would encourage individuals or organisations
to forward racist incidents to our office. The form is available on our website.

About the NCCRI Racist Incidents Reporting Procedure

The National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism
(NCCRI) has a system for recording incidents related to racism in Ireland.
Incidents can be forwarded by a victim or by organisations/individuals on
behalf of a victim. This procedure is confidential in that personal
details are not necessary for the form.

The data that is generated by this reporting system is primarily
qualitative and indicates key issues that need to be addressed. The
reports do not aim to provide a comprehensive list of every racist
incident in Ireland. However it plays an important role in complementing
other systems such as the Equality Authority casework and Garda records.

Organisations and individuals reporting racist incidents are also
encouraged to report the incident to the relevant authority responsible
for investigating and addressing the complaint, for example, the Garda
(racist crime), the Equality Authority (discrimination in the workplace
and in the provision of goods and services etc.) and local authorities
(graffiti, harassment on local authority housing estates etc.). In
addition the NCCRI also encourages individuals and organisations to
forward circulars, manifestos, articles or broadcasts in the national,
regional or local media which they consider to be offensive to minority
ethnic groups.

Incidents are analysed and compiled into six monthly reports. There have
been four reports to date, available on . The reports aim
to provide an overview of racist incidents reported to the NCCRI in the
preceding six month period, to identify the key issues arising from the
incidents logged and make recommendations to a range of relevant actors.
