Republican Sinn Féin, are calling on people to vote NO in the referendum on the Fiscal Treaty on May 31. The treaty, if passed, will perpetuate austerity for decades to come.
The referendum is an opportunity to send out a clear statement of intent that people are not prepared to cede any more power to the undemocratic and un-elected bureaucratic elite that is the EU. The expected release of Palestinian Khader Adnan after four months in Israeli custody without charge or trial coincides with a mass prisoner hunger strike which Amnesty International says demonstrates anger over administrative detention and prison conditions. Adnan, a 34-year old baker allegedly linked to Islamic Jihad, is due to be released in a deal between his lawyers and the Israeli authorities in February in which he agreed to end his 66-day hunger strike protesting at his administrative detention and ill-treatment. He had been held since December 2011.

On Monday 13th February 2012, the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign held a four hour day-time vigil outside the Israel Embassy in Dublin in solidarity with Palestinian political prisoner and hunger striker Khader Adnan.

This action took place on the 58th day of his hunger strike against his administrative detention (internment without trial) by, and physical abuse suffered at the hands of, the Israeli state. Khader was detained on 18th December 2012 and put in prison for four months (despite not being charged with anything). He immediately embarked upon a hunger strike in protest at the conditions and treatment faced by both himself and the over 4,440 other Palestinian political prisoners languishing in Israeli prisons. Physicians for Human Rights – Israel were today allowed to examine Khader, and reported that he remains shackled to his bed, his condition, “already at a life-threatening stage, continues to deteriorate” and he is “experiencing extreme pain.” It is clear that without intervention to secure his release, he will die soon. ... read full story / add a comment
