The Iran Tribunal - convened to put the Tehran regime in the dock for its massacre of 5,000-10,000 political prisoners in 1988 - took place in London over June 18-22. While it largely went unnoticed by the public in Britain, it caused uproar amongst sections of the Iranian left. The tribunal was not the first well-financed attempt to divert the genuine anger of the Iranian people, and their hatred of the Islamic regime (in its many factions), towards dubious ends. On June 12th a group of over 10 local white residents stormed onto the property of the Oliver family home, shouting racial epithets and demanding that the family hand over Eric Oliver’s 16-year-old friend Mikey Vasquez. The family refused and came under assault by the white mob, Eric came to his family’s defense and drove the mob away. The defeated mob members called the police to continue the attack on Eric Oliver. While Oliver was initially held on $100,000 bond, no arrests were made of the more than 10 white people who intruded onto the Oliver family’s property and assaulted its inhabitants. Police refused to take statements from neighbors who witnessed the attack. This extraordinary data set derives from 680 Syria-related entities or domain names, including those of the Ministries of Presidential Affairs, Foreign Affairs, Finance, Information, Transport and Culture. Over the next two months, ground-breaking stories derived from the files will appear in WikiLeaks (global), Al Akhbar (Lebanon), Al Masry Al Youm (Egypt), ARD (Germany), Associated Press (US), L’Espresso (Italy), Owni (France) and Publico.es (Spain).
