The service charges that are being brought in north and south of the border are part of a process of further increasing the proportion of tax paid by workers. The trend in global capitalism is to replace 'progressive' taxes (like income tax) with flat-rate taxes (like VAT, service charges, etc) to further shift the taxation burden from rich to poor. This is the policy advocated by the world bank, IMF, WTO and virtually all of the institutions of global capitalism. ... read full story / add a comment

The occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan are not going according to the Whitehouse plan. A quagmire and defeat is increasingly looking to be the fate that faces imperialism. For the international working class and anti capitalist movement a victory for ther islamic fundamentalists in these countries would enormously complicate the world situation. In this statement from Labors Militant Voice we argue that the working class movement internationally should be linking with the workers movement in Iraq with the view to help is to take the leadership of the struggle to defeat the occupations and to build a new middle east free from imperialist domination and based instead on societies where the wealth is owned and utilised collectively and where decisions are made on the basis of the needs of the population and taken collectively and democratically. ... read full story / add a comment

The Greens and their allies remind me of another globally ambitious movement with committed cadres: Communists. And like the Reds in their day, the "Green-Grays" are inspired by visions of a better world. It has been long observed that people for some reason on their non-banking days readily absorb shite about Dangerous Places, Famous People, Sensible Saving Options, Holidays, Interesting facts, Sport results, Media, gardening and health as well looking ahead at “upcoming issues” including September 11.
This therefore Concerns the same conceptual textual space that weekly produces “I really can’t think of anything newsworty to write” stuff from me. But I do not feel ashamed of nor dissuaged from writing a Sunday article unhindered by petty concerns for how difficult it is to be an editor, a worker, or reader reconciling split infinitives. ... read full story / add a comment
