Update 25th April: The Indymedia email server continues to be out of action which means notifications are not working and emails cannot be sent through the site contact form. We are working to get this system back in place.

We are in need of money once again to pay our website hosting bill which is due in mid April and now to cover the cost of the replacement of some hardware. We have set a target of €2000 as that is the amount needed per year to keep going. We are appealing to you the public to help out no matter how small a donation you can make.

Please visit our donate page for details on how to donate to our fund.

The following open letter concerning hydraulic gas fracturing in Ireland was recently sent to the Pat Rabbitte, Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources. Several other people have written to the minister and have received no reply.

This is an important issue because it concerns contaminating the land and water for the benefit of just a few over the rights and interests of many and protection of the environment. ... read full story / add a comment

The tunnel boring machine(TBM) planned to tunnel under Sruwadducon Bay has been named ‘Fionnuala’ after one of the children of Lir. In the story the 4 children of Lir are turned into swans for 900 years by their jealous step-mother. They spend their last 300 years in the seas off North Mayo. ‘Fionnuala the TBM’ is 140 m long and weighs almost 500 tonnes.  It is painted with the Mayo colours and is to be transported to Erris for early next summer. Shell plan to bore a 4.5 m diameter 4.9 km tunnel up Sruwadducon bay. This is Shell’s gift to Sruwadducon - ‘bod nimhneach an ghaill dhaill’  (the poisonous penis of the bitter and the blind ). ... read full story / add a comment

The cruelty of live hare coursing is well documented, but the infighting among coursing clubs also provides an insight into evil nature of this bloodsport. The Greyhound Nuts site, which is leading online website representing the so-called "sporting doggie business" in Ireland, offers an another gripping instalment on the ongoing saga of the horror story that is our "Greyhound Industry"... ... read full story / add a comment

There have been widespread objections to the granting of licences to drill for gas in the Lough Allen Basin. At the moment the only way of extracting the gas is the controversial practice known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. ... read full story / add a comment

'Fracking' is a term that not everyone may be aware of. It is used to describe a method of shale gas extraction known as Hydraulic Fracturing. Unfortunately it is a term we are very likely to hear a lot more about in the coming months and years. ... read full story / add a comment

It was with great shock and puzzlement that the Irish public was informed yesterday that subsidies were to be removed from wind and wave in this serious era of climate concern, environmental pollution... as advised by the ESRI. Unbelievable to dare to suggest it in bald terms. And to further suggest that Ireland's energy supply be focussed on one Shell non-producing gas well as the answer to Ireland's energy needs. This well is said to last for 15 years. Is the State still in the blind in spite of all the criticisms about our building and our banking policies. Something really wrong with policy makers minds When will we ever learn? ... read full story / add a comment

Recent events in Japan and revelations by wikileaks regarding the nefarious and corrupt activities of the nuclear industry working in India should be a wake up call for those considering the arguments of vested interests who are quietly pushing the nuclear agenda in our media. It would certainly be a nice profitable centralised earner for themselves and their friends but a panacea for our future energy woes it certainly ain't! ... read full story / add a comment
