DUBLIN – September 24, 2004 – The Irish Seas Nuclear Free Flotilla (ISNFF) will stage a peaceful protest on October 3 in Dublin, opposing a plutonium shipment from the U.S. that is currently bound for France and due to pass within 150 miles of Ireland’s south coast, breaching the nation’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of 200 miles. The ISNFF points out that the countries participating in this shipment - France, the U.S. and U.K. - have failed to comply with international law, and have shown a blatant disregard for the concerns of coastal nations. read full story / add a comment

In the phony war on terror, thousands of people have been taken prisoner and tortured with no evidence, charges or trial. The arrests make good PR for Bush, the admissions of error are 'less newsworthy'. Even before we set up the peace camp at Shannon we suspected that the US Government would use Shannon airport to transport its captives to Guantanamo Bay. After a lot of digging, and some luck, we now have a lot more than suspicion, and YOU have to help us to hold the Irish govt to account for this. a watered down version of this appeared on p6 of the Sunday Business Post today... I was expecting a bit more bite.. so here's a bit more of what's being hidden. read full story / add a comment

Stanislav Petrov (born c. 1939) is a retired Russian Army colonel who, on September 26, 1983, averted a potential nuclear war by refusing to accept that missiles had been launched against the USSR by the United States, despite the indication given by his computerised early warning systems. The Soviet computer reports were later shown to have been in error, and Petrov is credited with preventing Thermonuclear World War and the devastation of much of the Earth by nuclear weapons. Because of military secrecy and political and international differences, Petrov's actions were kept secret until 1998, and most of the world has not heard of this man who saved the lives of millions. read full story / add a comment

After giving IndyMedia a fair shot, I am through with it. It may be fine for announcements of events, but for op/ed and analysis pieces, it is more hassle than it is worth for me. I will work for 5 solid hours on an article only to have it shot to hell my 5 anonymous posters within an hour of posting it. read full story / add a comment

Kicking off with a Critical Mass action on October 1, the Dform festival will run for 3 days in BCN, bringing performers and artists from all over Europe's underground together in an environment made from recycled material. In many ways it will mark "the answer" to UNICEF Forum 2004 of Cultures which this week ended in debt, failure and recrimination for destroying urban balance in a hypocritcal and cynical attempt to manipulate culture. Resolving the Traveller accommodation crisis is a matter of urgency and one of primary concern in combating discrimination. The negative public perception of Travellers is reinforced daily by the sight of families living on roadside sites with no sanitation, water, electricity, refuse disposal, or facilities to dispose of liquid waste. The local authorities collectively are the only agents of change who can help improve the position of Travellers through co-ordinated action to address the human rights problems of Travellers by resolving their most basic need of shelter. TVG makes the case to Cork County Council to take the appropriate actuion as part of its Traveller Accommodation Programme 2005 to 2008. read full story / add a comment |
