Anti G8 Activities13th-15th June: Republican Sinn Fein will be holding an Alternative to the G8 Summit, an Anti-Imperialist Forum, in the Conway Mill Belfast, on June 13, 14 and 15. A number of speakers from both a Republican as well as a unionist perspective will be there as well as speakers the academic world. As you will be aware, the aim and purpose of the march to conclude in our Borough and outside our Centre is to create discord, division and disunity amongst the people of the of this great Borough. A few evenings ago, as the sky began to darken here in Kabul, Afghanistan, a small group of the Afghan Peace Volunteers, (APVs), gathered for an informal presentation about WikiLeaks, its chief editor Julian Assange, and its most prominent contributor, Bradley Manning. Basir Bita, a regular visitor to the APV household, began the evening’s discussion noting that June 1st will mark the beginning of Bradley Manning’s fourth year in prison. Two days later his trial will begin, a trial which could sadly result in his imprisonment for a life sentence. Should we abolish TDs' immunity from arrest (if coming to/from Dail)? The "rebels" continue to target journalists who report unfavourably on them. Full text at link. Yara Abbas, a prominent female Syrian war reporter, was killed in the country’s west, Syrian officials confirmed. The country remains a dangerous place for journalists, especially as some rebel groups reportedly target them for assassination. Abbas, 26, who worked for the privately-owned Damascus-based Al-Ikhbariyah TV (Syrian News Channel), was killed by sniper fire in a rebel attack not far from the Dabaa air base. The country’s Information Ministry offered no further details, but the pro-rebel Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed that several members of her TV crew were also wounded in the attack. read full story / add a comment

Interned Irish republican Marian Price will learn this week if she will be be freed after more than two years' imprisonment according to the Parole Commission which will make an announcement by Thursday. The british SS (secret services) say she no longer represents "a security threat". Marian is seriously ill in a Belfast City Hospital suffering from severe depression and respiratory problems. read full story / add a comment

The CAHWT today responded to a claim by Revenue spokesperson, Vivienne Dempsey, that payment of the property tax is "inevitable". CAHWT spokesperson, Ruth Coppinger, said : "There is nothing inevitable about paying the property tax. People can and will choose to take part in a boycott as a way of exerting political pressure on the government. Hundreds of thousands are likely to take part in an organised boycott of this unjust bondholder tax. Many have simply decided they have no more to give." read full story / add a comment

The protest against Monsanto and GM food took place today setting off from the Garden of Remembrance on Parnell Square in Dublin. Initially numbers were slow to build but by the time it was ready to start a surprising number of people showed up for a campaign organised outside of any the existing Leftist parties or groups and it was great to see that it attracted and drew in a lot of new people who perhaps prefer to not get involved in more overtly political campaigns. As the crowd set of down towards O'Connell street, there were at least 300 or 400 carrying a number of placards on theme of Monsanto and GM food and GMOs. read full story / add a comment

Historian and peace activist Rosalie Riegle, from Michigan, USA, discusses her latest book on 8 June at Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary, Crossing the Line: Nonviolent Resisters Speak Out for Peace, which brings together oral narratives from sixty-five peacemakers who have said no to war-making in the strongest way possible: by engaging in civil disobedience and paying the consequences in jail or prison. Among the riveting narratives in Crossing the Line is the dramatic story of the action and trials of the Shannon Five peace activists who non-violently dismantled a US war plane which had stopped in Ireland on its way to Iraq.
