There was a large turnout today on the 1st anniversary of terence wheelock who died as a result of injuries received in Garda custody. About 500 people from the Sean McDermot Street and Summerhill community turned out in support of the wheelock familes demand for an independent inquiry. The protest was preceded by a mass in Sean McDermot Street church. Other groups that came to show their support included activists with Residents Against Racism, Working Class Action, Sinn Fein, Labour and the Workers Solidarity Movement. The family of John Maloney also came out in solidarity as well as independent T.D. Tony Gregory, Cieran Perry, Christy Burke of Sinn Fein and Joe Costello of Labour.

Larry wheelock addressed the crowd and was followed by Joe Costello speaking on behalf of the local public representatives (Burke and Gregory) and Cieran Perry then spoke. read full story / add a comment

terence wheelock died on the 16th of september 05, from injuries he sustained on the 2nd of june 05 while in the care and custody of the gardai at store st garda station Dublin 1.
For three long months terence wheelock fought for his life in intensive care at the mater hospital.
Finally his family made the distressing and tough discision to turn the machine off.

One year on from his death the family are organizing a public protest 16/09/06 2.30pm sean mcdermot st church, to highlight the many unanswered and disturbing aspects of this tragic case.
In that year the family has suffered intimidation, harrasment, and assaults by gardai in there own home at summerhill D1.
Also in the year 16 months after the appaling injuries terence suffered. the extent of these injuries are only coming to light,
they are consistent with a severe beating, defence marks and blunt trauma to the brain, also bruise's to his back and legs are consistent with some sort of assault and all correspond at time of arrest.

terence wheelock died in suspicious circumstances after being arrested and held in Store Street Garda Station in Dublin last June. The Gardaí maintain that he attempted to take his own life by hanging himself from a light fitting in the cell. Before any proper investigation could be carried out, the cell was completely re-furbished. This included the removal of the light fixture.

The family of terence wheelock are campaigning for a proper public inquiry into the events surrounding his death. So far, the Department of Justice have agreed to carry out a limited, internal investigation by a senior Garda who spent many years working in Store Street.

The family have, however, been subjected to a sustained campaign of intimidation from the Gardaí, including assaults and arrests. Earlier this week, terence's brother was arrested and taken to Clover Hill high-security prison because of a fine he had not paid in 1988.

That's an eighteen-year-old warrant. Throughout those eighteen years, the Gardaí could have got in contact at any time.

The article below is from Daily Ireland.

One year on from the unexplained death of terence wheelock after his detention in Store Street Garda Station, his family, his community and the wider Irish public demand some meaningful answers. In that time, the gardaí have paid their respects by physically attacking the wheelock family and continuing their harassement of youths from Dublin's east inner city.

Indymedia has videod and otherwise documented garda brutality in the past, only to see those caught red-handed, be exhonerated by the irish Justice System. However, the deaths of Brian Rossiter, 'Johnner' Moloney, and terence wheelock, and the lack of accountability regarding numerous garda usage of lethal force, point to something very sinister among the ranks of the Guardians of the Peace, and a willingness to cover up, if not sanction it, within the Department of Justice. read full story / add a comment

On Saturday 3rd June 2006, the family and friends of terence wheelock along with supporters of their campaign for Justice will gather for a vigil at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Sean McDermott St, Dublin 1 at 12pm, a year and a day to the date upon which terence was arrested and taken to Store St Garda Station, from where he was later to leave in a coma for the Mater Hospital. Three and a half months later he died. The Garda Síochána claim the injuries which ultimately resulted in his death were self inflicted, yet their actions subsequent to his arrest and detention lead any reasonable person to suspect otherwise. The recent unwarranted invasion of the wheelock home and ongoing documented intimidation of the family as they continue to search for the truth, confirm for many these suspicions.

Following the vigil a peaceful protest will be held at Store St Garda. All supporters of a civil society where a person's life is not endangered or threatened by the powers of the state; a society where justice is not exclusively a posession of the priveleged and dominant, are asked to attend.

Below is the harrowing story of Garda malpractice, harrasment and obstruction of justice through the words of terence's mother Esther and brother Larry.

No-one should be surprised by the actions of our Guardians Of Privilege in Baldonnel last weekend. The grumpy authoritarian ego-trippers had to do something to justify their bank holiday overtime pay and the use of the copper-copter. Cuffing a young lad, forcing him to the ground and kneeling on him because he didn’t want to piss himself – that’s really guarding the peace. It seems as though the boys in blue haven’t quite moved on from the days of former blueshirt Garda Commissioner Eoin O’ Duffy. The "few rotten apples" thesis spouted by the Garda Representatives Association (ironically acronymed GRA) isn't credible. One only has to look at the cases of the wheelock, Mulhall, Abbeylara, McBrearty families, RTS 2002 along with the Sallins train robbery, the 'Kerry Babies' case and Shercock cases in the past as evidence of a wider, institutional and generational malaise with the Gardai. Even, Henry Grattan called the police service" an abominable institution". read full story / add a comment
