international / anti-war / imperialism / news report Monday September 14, 2009 23:30 by Edward Horgan
The monthly peace vigil at shannon on Sunday 13 Sept took place on a beautiful Indian Summer's day when nature seemed to be at peace with itself. However, a closer look inside the airport fence showed very few civilian planes, with Aer Lingus cut backs on shannon services, Air France/CityJet about to abandon its shannon Paris route, and Ryanair also planning schedule cutbacks. There was plenty of military activity however, with four warplanes surrounded by Gardai and Airport Police. read full story / add a comment

A very successful peace conference was held at shannon airport on Sat 5 Sept 09 for the purpose of highlighting the interconnections between the establishment of a US forward airbase at shannon airport, the militarisation of Europe, the abuse of Irish neutrality and the Lisbon Treaty. The attendance of over 80 was mainly for Dublin, so it was great to get such a dedicated group of peace activists to shannon to show them very clearly to extent to which Irish neutrality has been abandoned at shannon airport and the extent to which Ireland is complicit in the crimes against humanity being committed in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan. read full story / add a comment

The McCarthy or “Bord Snip Nua” report on public spending outlined a range of proposed cuts in government expenditure. Of the €5.3b in possible savings, it can be safely said that at least €4b of this (and probably more) targets the working class. Indeed, a full third of the cuts are aimed at pensioners and unemployed. In the private sector, attacks on our class continue in the form of pay cuts, short time and lay-offs. read full story / add a comment

Information provided by the Minister for Foreign Affairs sheds disturbing new light on US military use of shannon Airport. According to the Minister the troop and air force crews that pass through the airport are not the only US military there. There are also two US officers of military rank permanently based in the airport. Their official role is to assist with the transit of US Government and Government contracted flights. The arrangement has been in operation since 2003 and was done without Oireachtas approval. read full story / add a comment

This Tuesday I rang Cape Cod Times journalist Karen Jefferies, who had done an article on my candidacy in the European elections with details regarding the investigations into the misapplication of 3000 of my first preference votes to Declan Ganley's quota. She told me that she had just returned from the Kennedy compound where Ted Kennedy looked to only have a couple of weeks left. It was with great sadness that I received the news the following day that indeed Ted Kennedy had passed away, so I decided to put together the details of my only dealings with the late Senator from Massachusetts. read full story / add a comment

Newspaper opinion pieces are naturally partisan in content and often aim for controversialism, but such is the display of imposture in one from Tony Kinsella in the Irish Times of the 24th of August 2009 that it takes a whole plateful of biscuits. 'I don't have to imagine myself back in some dark age in order to be subjected to fact-free arguments. Tony Kinsella is doing it to people right here and now in the early 21st Century. He's wrong if he thinks it's going to go unchallenged or be accepted unquestioningly, though.' read full story / add a comment

This third part of my current series on Latin America will detail the current bases operated in Latin America and takes at least part of its title from a wonderful article published this afternoon by Fidel Castro on the subject of the new push by USA to open up more bases or what it terms "forward operating locations". Fidel writes a letter to Granma the official newspaper of the Cuban revolution named after the boat which left Mexico in 1956 carrying himself, his little brother Raul, the immortal Che and the much overlooked anarchist Camilo Cienfuegos to start a revolution. The rest is history, so they say. Courtously the editorial folk at Granma print Fidel's letter every week regardless of its quality but somehow this afternoon's started a "buzz" in Latin American solidarity and analyst circles worldwide for its wonderful byline & prediction : "US global domination and robots by 2020". Here follows a historical over-view, summary of Fidel's article & a guide to the current US bases in South America. read full story / add a comment

Ireland has some of the world’s most important bogs. Peatlands comprise almost a fifth of Ireland’s land cover, and lock away a massive 1.2 billion tonnes of carbon. They are also home to around half our endangered bird species and around a quarter of endangered plant species. Peat bogs are amazingly efficient carbon sponges. A healthy bog typically stores 10 times more carbon per hectare than any other system, including forests. Peatland protection, according to the UN Environment Programme is “among the most cost-effective options for mitigating climate change”. Damage to peat bogs is now producing the equivalent of over a tenth of total global fossil-fuel emissions. read full story / add a comment

13 peace activists attended the monthly shannon peace vigil on 9 Aug 09. As usual we were outnumbered by uniformed and plainclothed Gardai. Peace activists travelled from Dublin, Cork, Mullingar, Galway, Ennis and Limerick to attend. The reaction of passing motorists is increasingly encouraging and positive. Since August 9 is the aniversary of the distruction of Hiroshima in 1945 by an Atomic bomb, a war crime committed by the US airforce, on the orders of the then US President, it was considered appropriate to commemorate this event. Within the airport about 200 armed US troops were passing through the airport on an Omni Air chartered troop-transporter. read full story / add a comment

Element Six/De Beers’ plan to shut their shannon plant, sacking 370 workers, and move production elsewhere is a disgusting stab in the back of the workers whose hard work has made them billions in profits over the years. After huge sacrifices, including working part time on the promise that this would save jobs, the company now want to pack up and jump ship, with only a pittance of a redundancy. The entire cost of the redundancy scheme to the company is only €6.6m, about one week’s turnover for the factory, according to the Irish Independent! Note: This article was written before management started discussing an "alternative" proposal saving "some" jobs, probably only a stay of execution, and demanding much reduced wages and terms and conditions. Therefore, the need for a fight still very much stands. read full story / add a comment |
