On the Radio 1 "News at One" programme today, RTE journalist Seán O'Rourke was chatting with the captain of the US warship which is in Cork for the weekend. They spent a lot of time talking about the history of the ship's name, but didn't seem to bother for a [moment] to speak about what this particular warship on our shores has been doing.

Today the ploughshares Dominican nuns Jackie Hudson, Carol Gilbert and Ardeth Platte were sentenced to 18 months, two years and nine months, and three years and five months respectively after a ploughshares action in Colorado. The Catholic Worker five also had a bail hearing today in the Dublin Circuit Court, obtaining a significant relaxation in bail conditions but not a trail date as expected. read full story / add a comment

Two ploughshares communites are back before the courts this Friday July 25th. Three Roman Catholic Dominican sisters - Ardeth Platte, Jackie Hudson, Carol Gilbert - of the "Sacred Earth and Space Plowshares" are to be sentenced in Colarado, USA, to 6-20 years after being convicted of "Injury/obstruction of national defense of the US" & "Injury to government of the property of the US Government" of an ICBM missile silo. The Pit Stop ploughshares - Deirdre Clancy, Nuin Dunlop,Karen Fallon, Damien Moran & Ciaron O'Reilly have a pre-trial appearance at the Four Courts, Dublin. They have been charged with 2 counts of criminal damage to a hangar (€400) and a U.S. Navy War Plane (€2.5 million). At Friday's hearing, the judge will set a trial date and revisit bail conditions (the defendants are required to sign on at a specific Dublin garda station daily, banned from within a mile of the U.S. Embassy and banned from Co. ..Andrea Needham, one of a number of women who undertook a ploughshares action to disarm a warplane in the UK bound for use by the Indonesian military in East Timor and who was acquitted in court, spoke in support of more direct actions in Ireland...When the march set off for the airport, however, it soon became clear that the Gardai intended to allow two lanes of traffic, coming from and going to the airport, to pass by protestors. This meant that vehicles were coming right up behind protestors within a few inches of us, some at great speed – a considerable danger....Once our path was blocked, we were told that Inspector Tom Kennedy, the commanding officer on the day, had lied to the spokespersons....Later, Gardai swooped on several of those in the blockade and began dragging them towards a police van...the children of the arrested parents were left unattended... read full story / add a comment
