This conference was organised by the Irish branch of the Association for the Study of Peak Oil to bring together people from government and the industry as well as some of those working to alleviate the problems. Unfortunately for a variety of reasons Cork Shell to Sea has so far been unable to gain entry but stimulated by the ideas presented on the ASPO website and our own experinces we put this leaflet together that we think raises points that anyone working in this area would do well to consider. This is the text, we plan to distribute this leaflet outside the conference later today and to write a further article in the next day or two. read full story / add a comment

There was a flurry of excitement some time ago about a controversial interview with Noam Chomsky in the Guardian. Chomsky himself strongly contested the account of his views given by the article, and in due course the paper repudiated it. Reading over the text, there’s little doubt that the journalist (Emma Brockes) was trying too hard to cause a stir – with the goal of scalping a well-known figure firmly on her mind, she lost the run of herself and delivered a sloppy, inaccurate and misleading piece. What many people lost sight of during the controversy, though, was the light it shone on a troubling problem: the persistence of left-wing stupidity concerning the Balkan wars of the 1990s. read full story / add a comment

Almost 210 years ago on the 23rd of May 1798 the largest popular republican rising in Irish history began. Across the island tens of thousands fought under the banner of the United Irishmen. Hundreds of thousands had been sworn into the organization in the preceding four years. On four occasions revolutionary France sent thousands of troops to aid the rebellion, the United Irishmen had built contacts with revolutionary republicans across the globe, including the USA, France, Hamburg and England. The response of the British state to the rise of the United Irishmen was a brutal counterinsurgency campaign that stirred up sectarian conflict on the island. 1798 thus came to shape much of the political struggles that took place in the following centuries. read full story / add a comment

Today is the 88th anniversary of the largest 'Mayday' demonstration in Irish history, when what the Belfast Newsletter described as "a little band of disgruntled Red-Socialists" led 100,000 workers through the streets of Belfast. Everywhere else in Ireland in 1919 had also seen massive Mayday demonstrations, 10,000 demonstrated in Burr Co. Offaly. Outside of the North East these had been called for the 1st of May "to demonstrate the solidarity of workers and to reaffirm their adhesion to the principles of self-determination" but Belfast marched to a different theme on the 3rd. North and South a massive wave of working class militancy had grown but although these struggles shared a common rhythm they happened in isolation from each other. read full story / add a comment

From 6-8 June 2007, the G8 Summit – the meeting of the heads of state and government of the USA, Canada, Japan, Great Britain, France, Italy, Germany and Russia – will take place in Heiligendamm in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on Germany’s Baltic Sea. The Summit location is the Kempinski Grand Hotel. As there seems to have been a remarkable absense of discusion, debate and practical organising surrounding this years G8 blockade mobilisations in germany this june, ive attempted to collate some info that may be useful for readers. It is by no means comprehensive and apols of not having mastered HTML but hope it is of some assistance One thing is certain. This year is going to be big. Even though the traditional date have been moved forward a month to try to disrupt our 'disruptions', the unprecedented call, planning and actions will have an impact far greater than recent G8 manifestation. This will be part of making capitalism history. Check out the links below for more info. read full story / add a comment

The workers Solidarity Movement held its Autumn 2006 National conference in Seomra Spraoi, a social centre in Dublin. The conference saw around two thirds of the membership attending with greetings sent from our comrades involved in the struggle in Rossport. National Conference opens with questioning the reports given by various office holders, editorial committees etc. A summary of these reports follows - quite a lot of details and indeed areas involving relationships with other groups have been removed, as these were not written for public consumption. read full story / add a comment

In the last fifteen to twenty years, two new phenomena have finally reached Ireland –Immigration and alongside it - Racism. This is not to say that we Irish never had our prejudices before the ‘blacks’ arrived, back then we were quite happy directing our bigotry and ignorance towards travellers, gays, Jews and Protestants. read full story / add a comment

This is a summary article of a thesis I wrote, and titled.. ‘Contemporary Critical Theory....Transgressing the logic of Capital..... Deconstructing Post Industrial Capitalism and Reconstructing an Alternative......Radical Theory for Modern Pirates' whilst doing a philosophy MA in Amsterdam. The overall thesis would be far too long to post in its entirety so I thought that I would post this summary. I posted it on this site as I feel that a lot of people using it would share my basic arguments and that such a modest theoretical contribution to a budding anti- capitalist literature might make for an interesting online debate. read full story / add a comment
