If an act of savagery such as the bombing of an airliner, the murder of captive on an internet video, the assassination of a politician etc with the publicity it generates in the modern media can shake the will of a society that is more economically powerful and militarily stronger, an individual already contemptuous of decadent democratic politics, might be inclined to believe it is a greater crime not to use political violence and information manipulation to achieve his ends. read full story / add a comment
national / eu / opinion/analysis Sunday May 25, 2008 09:15 by Howard Holby
The transformation of democratic rule of law into a law to support an EU-federalist oligarchy is however far from getting the whole picture of Europe’s current and projected political system. In this part we compare the main features of the political system of Ireland known as “parliamentary democracy” with the basic criteria of democracy identified by experts of political theory [11] by reconciling two complementary widely accepted democracy-indexes: of Polity and Freedom House. After matching the observations of the system in Ireland with the two essential features of parliamentary democracy, which fill the word “democracy” with its actual meaning - meaningful elections and political freedom -, we find that these are converging to a zero value in Ireland under the overwhelming pressure of Lisbon. (In order to keep one reading unit within a reasonable length we would prefer to post the three parts of the article as separate publications.) read full story / add a comment

Radical health reform, in terms of creating equality and accessibility, and stopping the agenda of privatisation and for-profit medicine, is one of the great challenges facing Irish society. In this pamphlet, anarchists explain the reasons why such change is needed, give examples of important first steps in creating change, and describe the type of struggle that is necessary if we are going to win. PDFs of this pamphlet can be downloaded: A4 version - http://www.wsm.ie/attachments/mar2008/health_pamphlet_1...1.pdf A5 booklet version (for double sided printing) - http://www.wsm.ie/attachments/mar2008/health_pamphlet_a...1.pdf read full story / add a comment

An member of the WSM and the Turkish anarchist organization AKI look at the crisis in Turkey, a crisis pushed further into the spotlight since this article was written by the threats to invade Iraqi Kurdistan. Turkish politics are full of contradictions and paradoxical situations. But the bottom line is that both the “democratic” political Islam as well as the “authoritarian” army are elite alternatives opposed to the basic interests of workers, that have agreed on the fundamentals and will likely keep agreeing in maintaining the repressive political structures of the Kemalist state, read full story / add a comment
