Anyone contemplating voting No! for the first time in the upcoming lisbon 2 referendum in Ireland really ought know the name of the candidates to be the first president of the EU. After all it's not a completely done thing that once the Irish get their answer "right", Tony Blair will sweep into the history books. The current chancillor of Germany, Angela Merckel is another leading candidate as are former prime ministers of Sweden and Luxembourg......"anyway"....... Germany is in the news globally at the moment for several reasons. First the fact that last Friday its army ordered an attack by the USAF on a fuel tanker in Afghanistan which resulted in the deaths of over 80 civilians. Second because it is running into elections. Third because its AIDS awareness people have presented a publicity image of Hitler shagging a girlie from behind with the caption "AIDS is a mass murderer". Here follows a miscellany of links in English so you can keep abreast. read full story / add a comment

Until this week most young people doing juggling two worthwhile tasks like convincing their elders to vote No to lisbon (either for the second time or the all important first) or researching a hefty Junior Cert project on international strategic relations and peace studies - would have had to rely on figures on the official arms trade dating from 2007. Since then we've seen a celtic tiger die and a mismanagement of the US economy under its war presidency of Bush infect the world with an economic crises. Unsurprisingly therefore arms trading of the official kind is down. But in good news for pro-Americans and pro-lisbon Europeans, the share of the US in arms trading has jumped and second place globally is now taken for the first time not by Russia but our own catholic soulmates of the Italian Republic. read full story / add a comment

A very successful peace conference was held at Shannon airport on Sat 5 Sept 09 for the purpose of highlighting the interconnections between the establishment of a US forward airbase at Shannon airport, the militarisation of Europe, the abuse of Irish neutrality and the lisbon Treaty. The attendance of over 80 was mainly for Dublin, so it was great to get such a dedicated group of peace activists to Shannon to show them very clearly to extent to which Irish neutrality has been abandoned at Shannon airport and the extent to which Ireland is complicit in the crimes against humanity being committed in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan. read full story / add a comment

According to the Swedish "Dagens Nyheter" newspaper's updates in the last two hours, the US military entered a hospital run by the Swedish Committe for Afghanistan this week in pursuit of a patient who according to them held valuable intelligence on the Taliban. This would constitute a breach of the Geneva Conventions. This newsbreak follows coverage of the strongest statements critical of the NATO strategy so far by the Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt at the meeting of EU foreign ministers held yesterday. Anyone who prizes Irish neutrality or perhaps those who sneer at such a thing, ought know that Sweden is a neutral state. It is unique amongst the neutral states of Europe in that it boasts a highly developed arms industry which indeed is also one of the oldest happily supplying military hardward to all and sundry since before Napoleon. The Swedish share the northern "Provincial Reconstruction Team" with the Finnish under German command. read full story / add a comment

One of the great problems that people encounter in making up their minds about the lisbon treaty is that, depending on who you talk to, the treaty can appear to be an altogether different thing. According to those who are campaigning for a Yes vote, it merely serves to tidy up the existing European treaties, with a few changes to allow the EU to function more efficiently. read full story / add a comment

There are plenty of good reasons to vote No, again, on lisbon – far more than there are reasons to vote Yes. We shouldn’t be ashamed of saying that the best of them are only partly to do with the specificities of the treaty itself. On the other hand, we should be careful about some of the debating points we adopt. Anti-imperialists, peace campaigners and workers’ rights advocates on the No side have the best set of arguments, to be sure. The writings of Kieran Allen and Andy Storey, among others, are the gold standard and I wouldn’t presume to add to them. But a few folks on ‘our side’ – and with that phrase I don’t include the right-wingers who happen to support the same vote but are otherwise alien politically – are wandering down some political dark alleys. read full story / add a comment

It’s the time of year where we plebs get a chance to rectify our impertinence in rejecting the lisbon Treaty. In itself, rerunning the referendum is hardly an affront to democracy. After all, people are simply being asked to confirm the decision made read full story / add a comment

The WSM is calling for a No vote in the 2nd lisbon referendum on the grounds that people in Ireland can do a lot better than a choice between the clowns in the Dáil or those in Brussels. We oppose the EU's policies of privatisation, militarisation and attacks on workers' conditions but don’t insult people’s intelligence by saying that our current society in Ireland with its severe recession, diabolical public services and corruption is anything better. The major lack of democracy in our lives is not between us and the EU but between the Irish government and us. read full story / add a comment

The 21st Desmond Greaves Summer School will address issues concerning Ireland's place in the wider world in the twenty-first century. Of particular concern will be the uses and limits of national sovereignty and whether the nation state is any longer relevant. With the second referendum on lisbon imminent, the role of the EU and Ireland's position within it will be examined. There will also be a session on the events of 1969 in Ireland, particularly the North, in 1969, a year that was crucial in the development of the crisis there. read full story / add a comment
