As of 25 minutes a complete list of those states with embassies in Iran who have opened their doors to injured civil rights protesters has become available. So far only the state of Canada has refused to take in the injured from the ongoing serious unrest in the Iranian capital of the last 24 hours during which there have been over 20 confirmed deaths and untold injuries concurrent with the bombing of the Islamic state's founder's tomb. read full story / add a comment

The constitutional council of the republic of France has today published its 580th ruling this year. It overturns a Sarkozy law which would have allowed for the state to block internet access by all the kind of people who download movies, books, music and all that sort of general crap & fun regardless of whether they intented to enjoy it at home or sit by the side of a street like a third worlder and flog it to a passerby. This good news shall have repercussions on the European political level, the history of Human Rights, the shaping of the entertainment industry lobby strategy to tax RW CD' and storage devices & thus will make many more pages of news than malaria or Darfur. read full story / add a comment

June 2nd 1967 was a watershed in German postwar history so pivotal that the date would be used by a terrorist grouping as their name. Benno Ohnesorg was shot dead by a policeman. Ohnesorg had been peacefully protesting the visit of the then Shah of Iran to the then West Berlin. It has now emerged the policeman in question, Karl-Heinz Kurras had been a member of the STASI since 1955 though there is no evidence he was acting on their orders at the time of the shooting. read full story / add a comment

"Internationalist initiative" is a political alliance grouping formed to contest the EU parliament 2009 elections in the European constituency of the Spanish state. Its leader is the 93 year old, Madrid born, writer, dramatist, script-writer and Spanish film-director Alfonso Sastre, perhaps best known for being a member of the "1955 generation" of creative artists whose output and activity coincided with the opening of the Franco regime's attitude to art and literature which came along with its acceptance by the west under Eisenhower. In the report on the annual police operation in Berlin delivered by local district German Federal Police chief Dieter Glietsch, we may read the usual justification for expenditure on kevlar, praise for "garda management", plea for more than this year's 6000 officer deployment, attention brought to the 450 of them who reported injuries and then one little jewel of intelligence. a 24 year old police officer who is normally stationed in Frankfurt Airport was arrested after not only throwing cobble stones at Berlin plod but then having a fisticuff go at resisting arrest. Czech authorities ordered a former Ku Klux Klan leader, David Duke, to leave their country at midnight yesterday. The 59-year-old American had been invited to the Czech Republic by a local far-right group to give lectures in the University of Charles social sciences department, promote a book, and foment the agenda. But on Friday he was arrested and questioned by police on suspicion of denying the Holocaust, an offence under Czech law, however he was not charged since he had not actually denied the Holocaust publically on Czech soil at that point. Eluana Englaro has died peacefully this evening Tomorrow Italy's progressives and secularists will demonstrate against Berlusoni's unconstitutional decree attempting to ensure a woman who was in a coma since 1992 continues in that vegetative state. In Berlusconi's words :- "She is alive enough to get pregnant". Leaving one only to wonder who would have fathered her child and what would have been the morailty of such an act. However, the 11th president of the Italian Republic Goirgio Napolitano refused to sign Berlusconi's decree deeming it to be unconstitional. Pedro Iñaki Pérez Beotegui (alias "Wilson") died yesterday, on the fourth anniversary of the Al Qaeda M11 bombing of Madrid, in Vitoria in the Basque Country at 60 years of age. As "Wilson" he led the group who in 1973 rented a flat on at Calle Claudio Coello 104, Madrid overlooking the road which Franco's prime minister & expected successor Admiral Luis Carrero Blanco used every morning to travel to work after mass in an armoured car. For several weeks the four members of the team, codenamed "Ogre" tunnelled under the street and then placed 80kg of explosives which they detonated on the 20th of December 1973. The car in which Carrero Blanco travelled was sent 20 metres into the air & over a five storey building in the blast. The assassination is cited in almost every account of how the Spanish state passed from an authoritiarian military dictatorship to the process of "transition" upon Franco's death without named successor to the European social democracy it is today. read full story / add a comment

3 exit polls in the Spanish state concur that Zapatero has won the General Election in that state with an absolute majority of both votes cast & seats won. Over the Pyrennes in the French state, the electorate had its first opportunity to chastise Sarkozy, which exit polls appear to suggest has seen the left win 47% to a right wing 40%. In addition the Spanish PSOE or socialist party has won the autonomous elections for the Andalucian parliament. It appears the Spanish like liberal modernity even if the onions cost a lot & are prepared to continue with the Zapatero project for another four years. read full story / add a comment

180,000 signatures on a petition have failed to lobby the Wikipedia foundation to remove images of the founder of Islam from entries in multiple languages available on the online encyclopedia. However, the illustrations are not nor are likely to be included in the arabic version or other lingustic portals associated with muslim sensibility. It might thus appear languages are sensitive. This other press text lets you the aware reader see the declaration which kicked off the 2007 state of Emergency in Pakistan. It's a great little number which has already spawned a comprehensive encyclopedia page on English language wikipedia & means that the chances of numerous intelligent young Pakistani or Pakistani looking people, or even intelligent older people with Pakistani surnames getting their blogs noticed or opinions published are very good. It's great to be Pakistani. General Musharraf reckons his is the way to preserve that greatness whilst other worthy Pakistani politicians are coming out of the exile woodwork to volunteer to take him on. One favoured by RTE speaking from Saudi Arabia reckons things are going to Anarchy. Lovely you might think. Yesterday night the switch was flicked on one of the largest satellite arrays on the planet. Named after Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen the system brings together his dilletentism or whims as a mega-geek & the anglo-saxon culture industrially vital world of SETI and the very murky US involvement in deep Space radio telescope exploration in one project with one stated aim :- The search for intelligent Alien life. I'm going to treat today's "system booting" as a piece of tech-news & come at it from the ever reliable anti-trust angle. Thus I hope to raise awareness of the capitalist & philosophical elements of the project rather than spurn the "tinfoil hat" brigade onto anything sillier than they've achieved mostly not by being too suspicious or paranoid but rather by not putting their theories in social or historical context. This week saw a state wide campaign launched in Italy to stop anorexia nervosa the psychological eating condition which overwhelmingly but not exclusively is suffered by women. There have been many campaigns to stop anorexia since the condition first gained prominence just around post-war period when Europeans generally had enough to eat again. But the campaign launched by Oliviero Toscani of Benetton notoriety could just as easily be accused of body fascism & means something more. read full story / add a comment

It's difficult to succinctly represent the emotions in Peru today as the former president Fujimori returns from Chile on an extradition order to faces charges of corruption and human rights abuses. Many Irish people will have missed the pomp & ceremony, smells and bells which launched Europe's latest lowcost airline on ¨Monday. Despite its obvious competition with two of our most cherished little earners & institutions. The Holy See is offering cheap flights from Rome to Lourdes which I need not tell you will surely undermine both Ryanair and Knock. The Vatican is promoting the service as an opportunity for the faithful to maintain a proper atmosphere conducive to such religious devotion and prevent their journey falling into some Chaucer like tale.
