I wrote this article when I joined Sinn Fein. I'd just come back to the country from a spell abroad and reckoned they were all right. I'm not convinced now, but I've decided to send in the article anyway as I think it makes some good points. read full story / add a comment

international / anti-war / imperialism / news report Wednesday March 16, 2005 10:53 by global Women's Strike, Ireland
This statement was sent by the global Women’s Strike in Ireland to a demonstration and occupation at Rimini airport, Italy on Saturday, March 12th 2005 against the use of the airport for the refuelling of planes carrying US troops. There have been months of protests and the day before this occupation, it was announced that World Airways, the airline carrying the troops, was not going ahead with the plan to land in Rimini. An article in Il Manifesto on that day (‘Troppo Tensioni’, I Marines Non Atterrano by Cinzia Gubbini) says that when World Airways first contacted Aeradria on the 17 January, they let them know that they wanted to pull out of Shannon, Ireland and change the stopover to Rimini. read full story / add a comment

At the European Social Forum in Florence in November 2002 a debate emerged within the alter-globalisation movement over whether building opposition to Bush’s global war was a diversion from opposing corporate globalisation. The debate - in terms of developing a strategy for the movement - is centred on identifying the key issue or challenge that the movement should focus on. This is an essential task if the movements are to win and not just oppose or resist. read full story / add a comment

Once this was a place of great hope. During the late 1980’s, the Sandinistas were consolidating the revolution in Nicaragua, the FMLN were on the brink of overthrowing the government in El Salvador and the radical movements in Guatemala and Honduras were gaining ground. Today it is a region convulsed by massive delinquency and chronic state corruption whose economies are surviving tenuously on remittance money sent by migrants. The defeat of the revolutionary movements has ushered in an era of social disintegration resulting in a veritable neo-liberal dystopia. read full story / add a comment

The fifth World Social Forum (WSF) which took place last week in Porto Alegre, Brazil was a vital event for all those who are concerned with the state of the world. The WSF showed clearly that five years on from the Seattle protests, the ‘alter-globalisation’ movement continues to grow in strength and importance. 120,000 registered for the forum, almost 200,000 took part in the opening march and three hundred and fifty two proposals and calls for action came out of the more than 2000 panels and workshops that took place. read full story / add a comment

Today President Lula addressed thousands of activists in social movements in Brazil, and through them millions more across the globe. And he got jeered by the impatient. You'll get that.
