Mr Frank Muldowney from Dublin, is the man who is creating a global Pilgrimage for Peace from country to country, but the roots of it came from the organiser of the MS Society in Dublin, Mrs Lorna Mitchell. Her vision was the beginning of hundreds of peace and charity walkers across Ireland and abroad. She has now retired after 18 years of organised walks from China to South Africa to Peru. read full story / add a comment

There was a flurry of excitement some time ago about a controversial interview with Noam Chomsky in the Guardian. Chomsky himself strongly contested the account of his views given by the article, and in due course the paper repudiated it. Reading over the text, there’s little doubt that the journalist (Emma Brockes) was trying too hard to cause a stir – with the goal of scalping a well-known figure firmly on her mind, she lost the run of herself and delivered a sloppy, inaccurate and misleading piece. What many people lost sight of during the controversy, though, was the light it shone on a troubling problem: the persistence of left-wing stupidity concerning the Balkan wars of the 1990s. read full story / add a comment

international / anti-capitalism / news report Friday June 29, 2007 21:45 by iosaf
3 years ago the state of Ethiopia began what would become a monumental struggle when they announced their intention to trademark their Coffee Bean. The Ethiopian highlands & the surrounding "horn of Africa" were the origin of the drink coffee as far back as the 9th century [common era]. Specifically the Ethiopian state wanted to assert internationally recognised intellectual copyright on a range of coffee beans which to this day are mostly cultivated in the east African state. Many welcomed the move as evidence that late 20th century capitalism which has seen ownership concepts extended to ideas, living organisms & even specific genecodes could be a game which the poorest states might play to their advantage as well. Then came the orchestrated response of the Seattle USA based multi-national corporation Starbucks. Earlier this month both the company and state came to a settlement. read full story / add a comment

national / anti-capitalism / news report Sunday May 13, 2007 17:43 by Dublin Shell to Sea
On the 18th of May Dublin Shell to Sea is going to escalate its campaign against Shell’s command centre – Corrib house on Leeson Street with another day of action starting at 7.30 am sharp. This attempt to shut down Shell’s HQ, like our last day of action (http://www.indymedia.ie/article/82200), is being called to highlight the incredible theft of our natural resources that totals 51 billion euros in the Corrib field alone. This is only possible with your help; we encourage everyone to come along. read full story / add a comment

Thomas McLaughlin assures us that “no one actually tried to steal last Thursday’s ballot” (Glasgow Herald, Letters, 7 May 2007). But how do any of us know? If a team of e-fraudsters had succeeded in shifting one vote in ten from Party X to Party Y would they have left a calling card out of sheer bravado? read full story / add a comment

We need TV naturally to embrace news and what is happening around us. We also need radio but Liveline this week was a complete sham. Joe with the ego (Bottler)and Williams (the great man of fiction on Irish Gangland). We all know what happened when a prisoner phoned from a cell in Portlaoise. I personally believe RTE have broken the law on this occasion. How can we have a prisoner in Portlaoise taking the airways and making threats. read full story / add a comment
international / anti-capitalism / news report Tuesday April 17, 2007 13:06 by Mark
From 6-8 June 2007, the G8 Summit – the meeting of the heads of state and government of the USA, Canada, Japan, Great Britain, France, Italy, Germany and Russia – will take place in Heiligendamm in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on Germany’s Baltic Sea. The Summit location is the Kempinski Grand Hotel. As there seems to have been a remarkable absense of discusion, debate and practical organising surrounding this years G8 blockade mobilisations in germany this june, ive attempted to collate some info that may be useful for readers. It is by no means comprehensive and apols of not having mastered HTML but hope it is of some assistance One thing is certain. This year is going to be big. Even though the traditional date have been moved forward a month to try to disrupt our 'disruptions', the unprecedented call, planning and actions will have an impact far greater than recent G8 manifestation. This will be part of making capitalism history. Check out the links below for more info. read full story / add a comment

The world is in a state of chasis as Sean O'Casey might say. Since the advent of George Bush to the White House every other year seems to bring forth a war or talk of war. Few commentators believe that this will stop at Iraq. Last July even Newt Gingrich was quoted as saying that "we are in the early stages of what I would describe as the third world war..."(1) Many people are now openly speculating about who is next. Syria? North Korea? Saudi Arabia? And especially Iran are the subject of fevered speculation even in the established media. This writer would just like to opt for Russia as the next ultimate target. read full story / add a comment

mayo / rights, freedoms and repression / opinion/analysis Sunday February 25, 2007 20:46 by Bob Wilson
Five men from the village of Rossport, Co.Mayo, were jailed when they refused to stop resisting workers from Shell who had been awarded a Compulsory Acquisition Order to put a high-pressure gas pipeline through their land. They became national heros of a fast-growing campaign to defy the multi-nationals and their government backers and make them build their gas refinery at sea. This was the Shell to Sea campaign and this book tells the story of 'The Rossport 5' in their own words. read full story / add a comment
