An member of the WSM and the Turkish anarchist organization AKI look at the crisis in Turkey, a crisis pushed further into the spotlight since this article was written by the threats to invade Iraqi Kurdistan. Turkish politics are full of contradictions and paradoxical situations. But the bottom line is that both the “democratic” political Islam as well as the “authoritarian” army are elite alternatives opposed to the basic interests of workers, that have agreed on the fundamentals and will likely keep agreeing in maintaining the repressive political structures of the Kemalist state, read full story / add a comment

India so far has escaped the interest of Burmese democracy protesters in Europe & Ireland. Faced with the long list of anonymous corporations and short list of major foreign state players, it was understandable that many on the Burma Action front chose to launch all their energies & petitions & info-campaigns at China. India has now confirmed it is close to signing a deal with the Myanmar military junta to develop the port of Sittwe. The deal will see India invest $103m in the Myanmar regime just weeks since during the crises and collection of signatures to lobby against China, India signed a deal for Hydrocarbon exploitation with Myanmar. read full story / add a comment

(from last week's New Scientist - I'm publishing this in the inter-national public interest...) "We don’t need environmental evangelicals to tell us that sustainable development is a good idea. Yet, if that is our goal, we are heading in the wrong direction - with the exception of Cuba. So says the first study to examine the ecological impact of changing lifestyles around the globe. read full story / add a comment

In his column in the Irish Times, the Washington Post's opinionator Charles Krauthammer has said that General Petraeus can defeat Al-Qaeda in Iraq. I disagree! Far from defeating Al-Qaeda, the US occupation provides Islamist fighters with ideal terrain on which to recruit and train to overthrow Mr Bush’s friends in the house of Al-Saud, and does nothing to prevent Al-Qaeda cells elsewhere from planning attacks elsewhere. Krauthammer’s comments bear no resemblance to the realities of fighting Al-Qaeda, and every resemblance to a propagandum formulated by the White House to justify a military strategy whose chances of success are next to nil. Krauthammer tells us nothing about Iraq, and everything about Washington. Whte House staff are sure to go on vigorously propagating this implausible "We can defeat Al-Qaeda in Iraq" message in the media in coming months. My counter-analysis provides a copyright-free debunker for reuse as needs arise. read full story / add a comment

This conference was organised by the Irish branch of the Association for the Study of Peak Oil to bring together people from government and the industry as well as some of those working to alleviate the problems. Unfortunately for a variety of reasons Cork Shell to Sea has so far been unable to gain entry but stimulated by the ideas presented on the ASPO website and our own experinces we put this leaflet together that we think raises points that anyone working in this area would do well to consider. This is the text, we plan to distribute this leaflet outside the conference later today and to write a further article in the next day or two. read full story / add a comment

Last week, Joan Burton, a highly talented finance spokesperson and stalwart of the Labour Party withdrew her candidacy from the running for leadership of the Labour Party (a centrist concern with a pre-election pact with a right wing party). She cited lack of internal party support for her decision and nominated herself for deputy leader. This is a problem, for the preceeding forty eight hours The Irish independent Newspaper had been running the Gilmore story on both front page and editorial columns as The main bet for leadership, There is no other candidate declared. Deputy leader Liz Mc Manus is delaying nomination until later in the week. The profiling of women in irish politics, especially in mainstream parties relegates women to secondary positions, indeed a cursory glance at the papers indicates that politics is indeed a 'Job for the Boys', Tony O Reilly says so and he makes a lot of profit out of it. read full story / add a comment |
