down / anti-war / imperialism / press release Monday May 26, 2008 00:34 by Mark Hewitt
GEORGE BUSH – NOT WANTED HERE We are appalled at the news that George Bush will visit Belfast next month. It is disgraceful that his visit is as a result of an invitation issued by the First Minister and Deputy First Minister. This part of the world more than most places has an understanding of the deep damage and pain that war and conflict produces. George Bush is internationally regarded as a warmonger. The so called “war on terror”, now rebranded as the “war for democracy” that he has championed has inflicted that damage and pain on countless millions. read full story / add a comment

During the current Lisbon referendum campaign, numerous politicians, business and think-tank leaders and spokespersons have repeatedly asserted that EU Member States, including Ireland, have a veto on whether or not the EU signs up to a WTO free-trade deal on agricultural goods. This is not true. An international free-trade agreement that consists exclusively of agricultural and other ‘manufactured’ goods, cannot be vetoed. It can only be decided on by a ‘qualified majority’ vote by the EU Council of Ministers. Additionally, the automatic veto on free-trade agreements in essential public services, which Member States currently enjoy, is removed under the proposed Lisbon treaty, reports Barry Finnegan.* read full story / add a comment

Enclosing the commons – the historical process of fencing off land which had previously been in the public domain, for private use – is perhaps one of the most blatant expressions of the fundamental criminal nature of the capitalist state. Today it's the voracious neo-liberal model which stalks the last pockets of community-held global territory for privatization - from Chiapas, Mexico, to the deep Amazon, to the Garifuna coast of Honduras, leaving no stone unturned. read full story / add a comment

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) has long been on of the most trustworthy & respected research resources for people who like to count Scud missiles & stuff like that. In addition to "stuff like that", they do pretty good analysis too & not for nothing have they been ranked in the top 30 most influential think-tank entities on the planet. But most people who use this site don't pay attention to think-tanks & probably wouldn't even notice if they were floating like Tom Cruise in a tank having a think about how bad & evil the arms trade is for the good reason they didn't get the right degrees or recruited by the appropriate sort of shadowy agencies in their youth. Thankfully SIPRI has now decided to offer a lot of its information not only for free, but in a format & language. In short - (for I know no other way) I introduce you to the website " Armsflow ". read full story / add a comment
