That the production wing of global energy corporation, Shell, has a presence in the west of Ireland is now well known. Shell have been joined by another of their kind; Exxon Mobil, sometimes known as Esso. It's a company which, like Shell, has left a long dark oil slick like trail of controversy and notoriety across the globe. I was on my way to the printers (to get photos printed for anti war exhibition) yesterday (Fri. Aug.8th) and came across this protest/vigil that was organised by the 'Burma Action Ireland' group. I was surprised to see this, as I had heard or read nothing about it, I was even more surprised, given the important significance of the date, 8-8-88, that it wasn't advertised in the events section on indymedia. Idealists and utopians would claim that this phenomenon is the beginning of the disentanglement of the public sphere and political debate from the traditional dominance of political parties, big business, corporate media and vested interests who dictate what can and cannot be discussed, what is relevant and what is news-worthy. The political participation of the ordinary citizen could eventually be conducted entirely through electronic means. Instead of representative government it is suggested in the future technology will enable all citizens to engage in the ongoing political debate. The pattern whereby citizens vote at the end of each government term with paper ballots could be replaced with a form of direct democracy. History would have turned full circle as a global village like the ancient Greek city states would decide its priorities bypassing the traditional power structure of wealth and power. Now in the aftermath of a No vote the real reasons for the treaty are increasingly being made public despite the difficulty in getting these topics on the agenda even now as the Irish government 'reflects'. The rejection of the treaty has caused a headache for those politicians who favour EU unification, a unified EU military and further free trade liberalization. The French presidency is attempting to push through as much as possible on militarisation without full ratification. Apparently it was true that french white papers on defence were held over until after our referendum. Little good it did them. One of Sarkozy's problems is that military action undertaken by sub-groups of EU states without the need of agreement from all states has been scuppered by the Irish No as 'Structured co-operation' in Article 48 would have allowed for this and an EU military budget but Nice does not. read full story / add a comment

People either know who Habermas is, or they don't. He's not the type to get quoted a lot, but if you go to university and study marxism, sociology, philosophy or aesthetic criticism - you will be required to read some Habermas and remember how to quote him. A worrying amount of reports are coming in about the possibility of a new front in the ongoing “war on terror”. The chances of an attack on Iran, who have never attacked anyone outside of its borders for 280 years now, is being increasingly talked about. But who might lead this attack and in what way might such an act further destabilise the world, both externally in the Middle East but also here at home in Europe and the “civilized world”? Ireland has rejected the Lisbon Treaty with a decisive majority and very high turnout, period. Yet, the Commission and the European Council declared the dead Lisbon Treaty still ‘alive’. The fallacious premise the EU has chosen as a basis for continuing to justify the unjustifiable course of Lisbon: “the Treaty has been ratified by 18 states”. The factual premise however is this: 1) The Lisbon Treaty has been rejected by Ireland; 2) The Lisbon Treaty, in its earlier form as the ‘EU Constitution’ [1], had already been rejected by France and Netherlands long before the said 18 countries started to ratify it under a new name. For many of the NO voters one of the main reasons to reject the Lisbon Treaty has been the fact that the Lisbon Treaty is already a dead treaty to begin with. If the EU insists that Europe’s ‘problems’ can be solved only without the agreement of its 500 million voters and only with a version of Lisbon Treaty - that is the real problem of Europe. read full story / add a comment

If an act of savagery such as the bombing of an airliner, the murder of captive on an internet video, the assassination of a politician etc with the publicity it generates in the modern media can shake the will of a society that is more economically powerful and militarily stronger, an individual already contemptuous of decadent democratic politics, might be inclined to believe it is a greater crime not to use political violence and information manipulation to achieve his ends. read full story / add a comment
