There is no entity in the world more keenly aware of the criminal nature of the Israeli project in Palestine than the government of Israel itself. David Ben Gurion, the first Prime Minister of Israel is often quoted on this point. But while Palestinians remain in a state of exile and oppression in their own country, he cannot be quoted enough: "Why should the Arabs make peace? If I was an Arab leader I would never make terms with Israel. That is natural: we have taken their country. Sure God promised it to us, but what does that matter to them? Our God is not theirs. We come from Israel, but two thousand years ago, and what is that to them? There has been antisemitism, the Nazis, Hitler, Auschwitz, but was that their fault? They only see one thing: we have come here and stolen their country. Why should they accept that? " http://simple.wikiquote.org/wiki/David_Ben-Gurion read full story / add a comment

This article is an attempt to articulate a view that our EU, and particularly Monetary Union, membership has not been beneficial - and in fact ruinous - with respect to the current economic crisis. It is hoped by this to answer some of the criticisms of the Lisbon No campaign from commentators who claim that the opposite is the case (1). read full story / add a comment

Dear Pat, (Wednesday 21 January, 2009) Strange times indeed! Yesterday Martin Luther King’s dream was realised with Barack Obama becoming the first black president of the united States. Today sees Ireland celebrating, after much movement building based on Hope and Bold-ness of vision, the 90th anniversary since the first meeting of Dail Éireann. But strangest of all is that we are living in times of such climate catastrophe, which threatens our collective existence regardless of nation and race, and in Ireland this fact is neither sufficiently recognised, nor is sufficient assistance given to those with visions for sustainable change. read full story / add a comment

I recently attended a conference here in Managua, the subject was, among other things, the recent office raids and the threatened expulsions of several international NGOs by the Ortega-led Sandinista government. The attendees were a collection of both Nicaraguans and internationals and the discussion around reasons, reactions, and responses was both interesting and at times, quite inspiring. However, what struck me the most during the conference was something repeated over and over again by the meetings chairperson in her analysis – that if you know something, or learn something new then you have a responsibility to share it with those around you. She was talking specifically about the need to continue questioning the increasingly arbitrary actions of Nicaragua’s current Head of State, but I am sure she would agree that it can be applied to a much broader spectrum of experience. read full story / add a comment

Good news for the Left and progressives in general today, when the FT revealed that 30% of people in Germany, Europe's biggest economy and the world's second* largest exporter, "attributed the financial market crisis to ... the 'failure of capitalism'" rather than "to 'abuses of capitalism'. Or, as the Financial Times newspaper themselves put it: "Majorities in the UK, France, Spain, Italy and the US attributed the financial market crisis to “abuses of capitalism” rather than the “failure of capitalism”. The Germans were more divided, with 46 per cent blaming abuses, and 30 per cent saying capitalism itself had failed." read full story / add a comment

This is the second of a series of articles covering the financial and money markets from a critical perspective. In
'Financial Weapons of Mass Destruction', Paul Bowman examined the derivatives market and promised that the succeeding article would cover the 'story of the historical development of successive regimes of global financial orders' and would explain the role of the Eurodollars market 'in undermining the Keynesian Bretton Woods system'.
In the interests of space and relevance, I will only tell the story of the historical development of the regime of global financial order under US hegemony. I will begin by examining how the centre of capital accumulation shifted from Europe to the US in the first half of the twentieth century, and how following World War II the global financial order became centred around the US through the Bretton Woods system. I will then look at how the Bretton Woods System was undermined, concentrating as much on the role of workers’ militancy as on the role of the Eurodollars market. After considering the response to the crisis of Bretton Woods, I'll look at the Clinton boom bringing us up to the current situation of the US’s current heavy dependence on foreign borrowing. read full story / add a comment

Kieran Allen has just written an extensive article on the current global financial crisis. Here are the opening sentences on it. Most people are amazed to witness a new Wall St crash, when the spectacle of the 1929 crash was supposed to have vanished forever. For the past thirty years mainstream economists claimed that the market worked perfectly provided there was no state interference or strong trade unions. ‘You cannot buck the market’ was repeated like a mantra against anyone who dared to ask for higher wages, better environmental controls or a more developed welfare state. ‘Market forces’ were seen as wise spirits who knew best about how to run an economy. No one knew who or what they were but they appeared to work anonymously behind the scenes to make everything right. In almost every country, people were told to leave matters to these ‘market forces’ and not to seek too much regulation. In reality, these ‘market forces’ were gigantic financial houses which could move money around the globe at will. Today this mythology has been shattered. read full story / add a comment
