International companies and foundations are pushing for a "Green Revolution" in Africa - promoting a model which is heavily dependent on fossil fuels and represents the kind of "same box thinking" which has left up to 1 billion people in the world hungry. It is time for us to recognise that the system some believed in so blindly through the Celtic Tiger years is in fact causing increasing poverty, hunger and desperation at its “other end”. The US National Security Archive has in the last hours presented unto us its National Security Archive Electronic Briefing Book No. 282.”. There is both tension & worry in the two South American states with the largest and best equipped military forces, Chile & Brazil at the decision of Colombia to host 7 US bases as reaction to the decision by Ecuador not to renew the US lease on its “Manta base. In the last week the 6th democratically elected president of Brazil, Lula called for a meeting with Obama to discuss the US bases and said "the climate of unease disturbs me". Indeed the Brazilian government had already refused US overtones to use its base at Recife. Bottom-up rights are those rights excluded from UN human rights instruments because they were considered incompatible with neo liberalism and globalization. This pits a 'we are all in this together' establishment against the independent peoples e.g. small business, and the most disadvantaged. The discontented need to struggle to have these rights, which entail an ethical globalization, included in domestic and international human rights law. read full story / add a comment

In recent years climate change has loomed large in the public imagination. Scientifically, there is little doubt that it is a real threat to the future of human civilisation. The greenhouse effect has been known about since the early 19th century - gases in the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour trap heat from the sun, causing the climate of the planet to heat up over time. Probably the most spectacular known example of this effect in action is on Venus.As recently as the 1960s it was thought that Venus might have a climate that could support life. However, in 1962, a US space probe measured its surface temperature at 425°C. Billions of years ago, it had a climate similar to that of earth today – but a runaway greenhouse effect turned it into a ball of fire. read full story / add a comment

In any country with a half way critical media, the last few months would have been disastrous for Shell. In a crucial period in Shell’s imposition of an experimental gas pipeline on the people of Erris it emerges that Michael Dwyer, one of the security guards on this project, was part of an attempt to trigger a civil war in Bolivia. Soon after that it became clear that at least three others who had worked as security guards at the Shell compound had travelled to Bolivia with Dwyer and were wanted there for questioning. Some, it emerged, had links to fascist organizations in Eastern Europe. read full story / add a comment

Indymedia readers will be familiar with the work of Frank Connolly- He is the closest thing we have had to a good investigative journalist in this country for many years. The Corrib Gas report, Quarryvale and most recently his untangling of the corrupt mess that emerged from the incestuous nature of the Galway Tent, Dublin Docklands and the Anglo Irish Bank are just a few examples of why we need vocal independent and committed people like him to help us try to hold our political elites to account. It might seem surprising that someone with his track record would write an unreservedly supportive article about Siptu’s recent performance under the stewardship of Jack O Connor, under whose leadership the union has accepted the inevitability of attacks on workers as the first and maybe only solution to a crisis that could disenfranchise a generation. Oil and Gas multi-nationals always get what they want. That is, the resources for next to nothing. And nothing will stand in their way. This week 25 Peruvian Indians were massacred by the military. The same thing has happened elsewhere in South America in other countries and in Africa a-la Nigeria. In our own country, to avoid bloodshed, our politicians just handed over the resources for free. In Bolivia where Evo Morales nationalised their Natural Gas, death squads were sent out to kill him, with one of their own being Irishman Michael Dwyer who worked for a large oil company in Mayo. Anyone notice a trend here? So read on to find out what happened in Peru this past week...

A motorway in the "curve of the devil" region had been blocked by local communities of the area who feel their land, health, livelihood and community is threatened by the government's giveaway of the area, and its precious resources, to multinational oil and gas exploration. They are perhaps right to feel sad, threatened and terrified, knowing how things have faired in neighbouring areas with a similar story, Sion, Equador and beyond... The latest opinion polls continue to reveal a decline in support for Fianna Fáil, traditionally Ireland’s most successful political party. Disapproval of the coalition FF/Green Government’s performance is at 84%, a staggering indicator of dissent. Yet FF – the Soldiers of Destiny - retain support from some 20% of the electorate. Apparently not all who are dissatisfied will vote against the party.
