Zombie developers….. Vampire bankers….. Ghost estate creators….. Black holes that swallow tens of billions of Euros….. They sound like characters from a particularly eerie Hallowe’en tale of horrors. However while they might be spooky, there’s nothing fictional about this array of characters read full story / add a comment

Working class people throughout Ireland are suffering deep anxiety. With poverty, homelessness and unemployment escalating, the feeling is that we are on the edge of a phenomenal disaster. That sense of dread has been exploited by a government bent on even more savage attacks on public spending. We had been told previously that we were facing €3 billion in cuts this December. Now it is certain to be much more. A new four year economic plan is to be imposed aimed at reducing the economic deficit to 3% by 2014. So there could be up to €7 billion in cuts this December, with more to follow. This will mean increases in taxes, in particular the introduction of taxes on the low-paid. It will also mean unprecedented attacks on health-care, social welfare, child benefit, pensions, education and just about every area of social provision. read full story / add a comment

Amid the hum of words spoken and written here in Ecuador and further afield about the events of Thursday, September 30, two are easily discernible: “coup” and “democracy”. Yet it can be argued that neither concept had much to do with what unfolded on that day. It would be easy to say that the convulsions that gripped Ecuador on that day were just more of the same. This is a country, after all, that has deposed three elected presidents by different means (none of them impeachment), and at one stage could count 9 different presidents in 10 years. read full story / add a comment

Among the taxation proposals being mooted by government for the next and subsequent budgets is an extension of tax to the lower paid. This is to be accompanied by continued draconian reductions in the provision of health, education and other services required by the population generally and particularly by the poor. Government cuts and impositions on the poor and those on middle incomes who spend most of their income in Ireland will flatten the economy and increase the disastrous levels of unemployment and emigration. read full story / add a comment

Book Launch & Street Art Events - Cork Saturday 16th October London-based photo-journalist William Parry will be in Ireland to launch his new book about Resistance Art in Palestine. The book, Against the Wall – The Art of Resistance in Palestine, is a stunning collection of photographs that capture the graffiti and art which have transformed Israel's wall into a living canvas of resistance and solidarity. Featuring the work of artists including Banksy, Ron English, Blu and others, as well as Palestinian artists and activists, these photos express outrage, compassion, and touching humour. They illustrate the wall's toll on lives and livelihoods, showing the hardship it has brought to tens of thousands of people, preventing their access to work, education and vital medical care. donegal / miscellaneous / press release Monday September 27, 2010 10:48 by Journey in Wonder (volunteer)
A new book by Donegal community worker Keith Corcoran promises to offer important insights into a rapidly changing world and provide an entertaining read into the bargain. ‘Journey in Wonder’ is an account of Keith adventures through 2006 and 2007 when he travelled through North America and Asia. Keith explains how he came to write the book. “While I was away on my travels I used to send back a group email every few weeks to let friends and family know I was still alive and to share some of my experiences. Then one day while I was in India, an email arrived from my sister Donna to say that a Donegal paper had begun publishing my travelogues, which was a big surprise at the time! That gave me the idea to start writing a complete account of my travels when I returned home and the book ‘Journey in Wonder’ began to take form.” read full story / add a comment

FAS,the troubled state agency has lost all credibility, and this has not just been recently, this has been happening for years, with the government of the state 'training educational' agency, standing by still in support of these 'services',to provide free labour, and continue to not pay the people making FAS happen, the ce workers.FAS pay employers who take on their FAS employees hundreds of euros, while the FAS ce or apprentices, get paid by social welfare, this is not a system that works for the unemployed, currently only 3 % of former fas workers are employed in the jobs market,so what good has FAS done for the unemployed minus themselves and thier business associates apart from making the dole stats look good, what use is that when FAS are draining our economy and providing no job oppurtunities across the board. brainstorming for a new name will not solve the old problems in the well heeled FAS senior management. read full story / add a comment |
