Union leaders are now calling for the Cowen/Gormley mob to go. Jimmy Kelly kicks the ball rolling with a call to join in ICTUs demo November 27th. But thats hardly enough.Jimmy at the time said that UNITE was forced into the Croke Park deal. The record of te ICTU leadership must be examined. Its their craven policies which gave the Cowen Junta the ability to cut wages even further and to now plan to demolish the Health, Welfare and education sectors.

Support the ICTU Demo but no illusions in ICTU. We need a new Union leadership. One that fights to make the rich pay for the crisis.

Jimmy Kellys statement is below.

SIPTU is absolutely opposed to the lifting of the cap on University tuition fees proposed through the Browne review which could see fees soar to an extortionate rate of up to £12,000 per year. It beggars belief that these proposals be put forward at anytime, never mind in the depths of one of the harshest economic recessions.

The Browne review or any other proposed hike in student or tuition fees can not be allowed to happen, this will only result in preventing thousands of young people from low to middle income earning families from going to University and in thousands more emigrating with little to no prospects here. read full story / add a comment

The Irish Singer's Own Book in Boston, 1880 credited this song to Patrick Carpenter, a poet and native of Skibbereen. It was published in 1915 where Herbert Hughes said it had been found in County Tyrone. It is sung here by Ronnie Drew. It is today the anthem of Irish immigrants worldwide or the Rebels Yell of Irish Diaporadoes. The line " And loud and high we'll raise the cry, "Revenge for Skibbereen!" is the battle cry of Ireland's 80 million Diasporadoes scattered around the planet today. read full story / add a comment

Britain's seeing its biggest protest yet against the deep cuts the country faces to tackle its massive debts. Yesterday in London over 50,000 students protested against a planned hike in tuition fees which could see them treble to 9-thousand pounds a year. Later things got far more confrontational; students confronted police, entered conservative party HQ, smashed windows, occupied roof, lit fires in streets... Student fees protestors claim: 'This is just the beginning' read full story / add a comment

I just happen to work very near the Department of Finance and so I was a first hand witness to how events unfolded on November 3rd during the Students’ Protest. I came out to support the students -“hijack their protest” according to the lazy, subservient and incredibly pro-rich Irish mainstream media journalists, who are unable to understand a simple concept called “Solidarity”. read full story / add a comment

The Ireland Institute believes that the debate to date has been dominated by a narrow consensus that does not question the structures within which the crisis is being played out. This consensus regards capitalism as the right and natural way to organise the economy and society: no alternative is admitted. In this worldview, competition, individualism, small government, privatisation, free trade and free movement of capital are self-evidently good and the means to economic success. read full story / add a comment
