Herein we will focus on what seems to be a somewhat elaborate, albeit loosely organized, conspiracy (one hesitates to use the word as arguments are quickly dismissed as conspiracy theories) in the making in which a relatively large number of pro-Israeli factions (both students attending American campuses as well as outside organizations as well as outside monies)are attempting to manipulate and intimidate people so Americans relinquish their right to free speech on American campuses—that is the right to say critical things about peoples and organizations including Jews, Zionists and Israelis. read full story / add a comment

The Right2Water campaign had called for a national demonstration on Sat Aug 31st and quite a lot of effort had gone into publishing this with tens of thousands of leaflets distributed throughout the country and buses laid on to many of the major towns. There was a fair bit riding on this because figures show that significant percentage of households had still not paid and during the summer the government plans were upset when EuroStat came back and said Irish Water had to appear on the government accounts. In the meantime government ministers have been claiming it would not be privatized but when pressed on whether this is rock solid, they turn out to be quite slippy on this. And there is reason for this because the TTIP treaty between the USA and EU currently being negotiated in secret is a corporate wishlist that will allow corporations to sue governments through the Investor State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) which are corporate courts run by corporate lawyers and take precedence over national laws and there is no right of appeal. It will allow corporations to say that it is unfair competition to have things like our health, education and of course Irish Water in state hands and therefore it should be privatized. This is not some myth because the ISDS mechanism has already been used at least 500 times in other countries for basically lowering health standards and environmental protection. If TTIP is passed and so far Fine Gael have been in favour of it, including the ISDS, then they will say their hands are tied and they had to privatize Irish Water and of course every other thing. read full story / add a comment

Recently a major and moral decision was made to quell California legislature as to whether people suffering with terminal illness should have the right to die with dignity. Democrats did not have enough votes although the legislation might come back later in the year? To the extent that there was much of a debate in the news it has been one-sided with a chorus of status quo preventivists. The European Parliament is about to make another attempt to pass a resolution on the EU-US trade deal TTIP this Wednesday. Ahead of this critical vote, an alliance of over 480 organisations from across Europe is calling on MEPs to take the strong resistance from citizens seriously. 2.3 million Europeans have signed a self-organised European Citizens' Initiative that calls for an end of the TTIP negotiations. The following statement, as a contribution to the debate at the conference organised by the R2W unions on June 13, has been agreed between the People Before Profit Alliance,the Anti-Austerity Alliance, and some independent left-wing activists including Cllr Brendan Young. The Mayday Conference initiated by the Right2Water Trade Unions was designed to bring union members, community groups and political representatives into dialogue about an alternative to the political and economic establishment. We welcome the fact that these unions initiated such a meeting to build a political movement based on the anti-water charges struggle of the last eight months. Suicide is often thought tragedy or failure—but a person can lead an exceedingly relevant and meaningful life and still have it end with suicide. Suicide, although thought taboo and negative consequence, should not be thought especially conclusive to render some final judgment on that dead person’s attitudes about the entirety of his or her life, or personal series of assumed values while living. Esteemed and valuable lives do happen to end with this form of partial self-control over one’s finality. It can at times be practical to circumstances. The vaunted platitude the “value of human life” (as cultural supposition) has had little real open discussion or debate. Irrespective then of all peoples’ personal opinions (even if personal opinions are not often particularly individualist) one should be able to argue that thee ultimate human right of being-hood (and all related rights of existence) is the right to decide for the self whether one even wants to live a human life (especially as related to circumstances one finds the self). This is really the most basic litmus test to freedom as essential criteria as to whether one is truly free or not. read full story / add a comment
