What follows is a reflection on the anniversary of the acquittal of the Pitstop Ploughshares. I could only collaborate with Karen, Damien and Ciaron and was unable to contact Nuin. However, I am sure she would have no problem agreeing with the general spirit of our statement. read full story / add a comment

For many people who do not read Private Eye - it is just the magazine that is always being sued. This is because the only time the public ever hears about it is when the newspapers report that a libel writ has been issued or an out of court settlement has been reached. The impression is therefore widespread that Private Eye is constantly being bombarded with writs and at any moment it would go out of business as a result (1979: Goldenballs book Richard Ingrams)............ read full story / add a comment

Experts had warned for years that the M3 should never have been routed through the Gabhra (Tara-Skreen) Valley.
What we refer to today as a “henge” are two related architectural forms that come from the late Neolithic and the early Bronze age. They date from about 2500 to 1800BC and may consist of banks, earth enclosures and also timber circles and that is what we have in this case. Rath Medb at is an example of the earthen enclosure. The best known henge is of course Stonehenge. read full story / add a comment

I was reminded of last weeks Phoenix while listening to the Irish head of Transparency International on Morning ireland's business news section this morning. He was angelically critiquing companies here who may, (be forced to...) slip their standards abroad.

The Phoenix had an interesting article on this Irish Chapter of Transparency International (TI), on TI internationally, and on their links with the World Bank and curious unwillingness to demand Wolfowitz's resignation...

The two most well known Irish hydrocarbon deposits: the Corrib field and the Dunquin prospect are collectively worth at least E400 billion euros. They contain around 33trillion cubic feet of gas and between 2.5 and 4 billion barrels of oil. The gas in the Corrib belong to Shell, Statoil and Marathon and the Dunquin prospect is totally controlled by Exxon Mobil and Providence . We will end up buying back our oil and gas and they will be charged pitiful tax rates as they can write all exploration and construction costs over the past twenty-five years against tax. How did this happen? read full story / add a comment

My dream began the other night when Joe Duffy - the legend, was on his way out of RTE studios - he said to Derek - I don't envy you Derek, believe me. This f........ insect has caused me and my Lifeline staff nightmares since last March.

As we speak the Stroker Fahy is preparing for prison on Tuesday. His 97 year old mother is taking up residence in Galway with a far out cousin of Berties.

Does anybody out there remember the Stroker McSweeney? This guy came in from America two years ago under Government approval - as Chief Advisor of Science and Environment to the Government. He turned out to be a Walter Mitty - the phd was created by no less than Podge and Rodge. This man was let go - I ask - Why was he not charged with corruption too?

We can speculate on alternative scenarios that may have arose if Hitler had won WW2 or JFK had not been shot in Dallas or Cantona had not attacked a spectator with a kung fu kick.

But the most important question we must speculate about is the great "what if" of our times.

"What if Al Gore had won the US Presidential Election in 2000?"

This is what I think might have happened: read full story / add a comment

The new president of University College Cork, Dr Michael Murphy, has been quick off the blocks to establish a rapport with the media and reassure his audience that the new presidency, executive and governing body can be trusted going forward. But what about the past, what about the very serious allegations raised against UCC and what about the repercussions of the Malone Report? Any attempt to sweep the many outstanding matters at UCC under the carpet is likely to further inflame the situation read full story / add a comment

McDowell spoke of a research committee on how to tackle organised crime.
