Did the idea of the so called 'Pensions Levy' come from some of the very ICTU leadership who are supposed to negotiate on behalf of workers. This is one revelation that emerged on Saturday morning at a meeting of over 100 public sector trade unionists and two delegates from the Waterford Glass occupation. We were meeting in the Davenport hotel, Dublin to discuss a collective response to government attacks on workers and in particular the public sector pay cut. Most of those present were on branch committees or even national executives with a couple of branches delegating representatives to the meeting. The gathering could in that context be said to reflect the views of a large number of branches across the unions that organise public sector workers. read full story / add a comment

November saw WSM public meetings about anarchism in Cork and Dublin, with 40 people at one and about 60 at the other. A tribunal into political corruption in ireland has used the law to prevent some Irish newspapers from printing its preliminary report. Two Dublin-based papers, the Irish Times and the Sunday Business Post, received threats of injunctions aimed at preventing them from disclosing the main conclusions of the Moriarty tribunal. As a result, the Irish Times was forced to halt printing and destroy 25,000 copies of the paper on Friday night. read full story / add a comment ![]()

What next for the Campaign, now that the new Corrib Gas Forum set up by Eamon Ryan and Éamon Ó Cuiv will not “revisit existing consents and permissions given to the project”? What next, when "Governments around the world are waking up to the reality that natural resources are soveriegn assets and that it is entirely within the rights of the state to readjust taxation and royalty deals in times of windfall revenues or supply concerns" (Michael McCaughan, The Price of our Souls, Gas, Shell and ireland) read full story / add a comment ![]()

Drawing the thread through some recent news stories of oil corruption, climate chaos, fuel poverty, and doing what the so-called ‘mainstream’ media will not do, linking them together, most pertinently linking them with the continuing Corrib gas controversy. When corruption is uncovered in functional jurisdictions a long established and well tested series of events come into play. Police investigate and if sufficient evidence is collected suspects are brought before the courts to account for themselves. If found guilty, they are given appropriate punishment. In dysfunctional jurisdictions such procedures are often ignored in the interests of protecting the powerful. read full story / add a comment

This Referendum had a majority turnout of the electorate. The reason the Nice treaty could be put to a re-vote is because there wasn't a majority turnout. So the Lisbon treaty can't be put to a re-vote. read full story / add a comment
