Today, Veterans for Peace, Catholic Workers, Occupy London and other anti-war activists gathered outside the High Court in London in solidarity with WikiLeaks activist Julain Assange. Julian has spent the past 363 days in England under house arrest without charge.
A secret U.S. Grand Jury continues to sit in Virginia pursuing indictments. Leading U.S. Republican Presidential candidate Newt Gringrich has stated "Julian Assange is engaged in terrorism. He should be treated as an enemy combatant." We believe the U.S., British, Swedish and Australian governments are planning to do just that!
We are all weary of the war which has now entered its second decade. We need to question the lies of our war making governments, defend the human rights and offer solidarity to those resisters like Julian Assange and Bradley Manning who are being defamed and pursecuted for exposing the nature of these wars in which our governments remain complicit read full story / add a comment

Friday 25th November saw over 5 hours of Shell's peat and stone haulage completely blocked by campaigners, and no arrests were made. First thing in the morning four campaigners had trucks blocked for over an hour and a half, and later on one person climbed on top of a peat truck outside Shell's Bellanaboy refinery, remaining there for 3 and a half hours stopping all haulage. read full story / add a comment

On November 4th the main leader of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, Army of the People (FARC-EP), Commander Alfonso Cano, was killed near Suárez, Cauca, in an operation of the Colombian government, with logistical and intelligence support provided by the USA. The small guerilla force of 14 people was hunted down by over 1,000 troops in a multitude of Arpía helicopters. The preceding months had also witnessed massive and indiscriminate bombardments in Tolima and Cauca, and a military blockade of the area, with disastrous consequences for the local population, thousands of whom were forcefully displaced. In relation to this, our organisation:

The sixty million payoff to prison officers in Northern Ireland could be much better spent on addressing the causes of crime such as poverty, social deprivation and prison rehabilitation. Prison officers who served during the Troubles could walk away from their jobs with packages of more than £120,000 plus pension as part of a £60m redundancy programme aimed at ‘modernising’ the service.

The military council in Egypt, the SCAF, is more and more isolated from the Egyptian masses each passing day. Once the people chanted in Tahrir square, just before Mubarak's fall, that the Egyptian people and "their" army were one. Now it is becoming clearer the gulf separating the two of them: while the people still suffer from inequality, poverty, violence, military courts targeting protestors, emergency laws inherited from the hated dictatorship, the SCAF is making sure that "transition to democracy" is nothing but empty words. They are doing everything in their power to make sure that nothing at all changes. It may be that the people toppled in February the commander in chief, but all of his repressive building was left intact, and the military's role, headed by general Tantawi, is to make sure that the status quo is not challenged. This is transition to democracy as promoted by the USA and the civilian-military elites of Egypt. So the dictator is gone, but everything remains untouched. read full story / add a comment

This text was written by Madrilonia, a Madrid-based blog that writes about and participates in social movements. Madrilonia has been involved in the 15-M movement, which began with the mass protest organized by Real Democracy Now on the 15th of May 2011 and inspired Europe with the occupation of plazas across Spain. This text imagines a new form of strike across Europe and the Euro-Mediterranean region, a strike which is up to the task of confronting contemporary forms of exploitation and control. Translated by Mick O’Broin, the Provisional University The original Spanish language version is available here: http://madrilonia.org/?p=4802 read full story / add a comment

Thousands of Kazakh oil workers are now in their third month of strike action. In their struggle for trade union rights and negotiations over the implementation of a wage agreement, they have faced massive repression and intimidation. Hundreds of workers have now been fired. Their lawyer has been imprisoned for six years for “stirring up social conflict”. The police and riot police have been used against the strikers as well as the company’s security. One of the key trade union activists has now been murdered. read full story / add a comment

Several boats that are part of Freedom Flotilla Two - Stay Human have been detained and prohibited to sail by the Greek Coast Guard, including the U.S., Canadian and Spanish Boats to Gaza, and the Greek government has prohibited any boats from sailing to Gaza from Greek ports. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine calls upon the Greek government to immediately end this active complicity with the Israeli siege on Gaza and release the boats to join the Flotilla to Gaza, and calls on all popular forces and movements in Greece and internationally to demand that the Greek government end its participation in the illegal Israeli blockade and allow the Freedom Flotilla to sail! The Greek people have demonstrated, time and again, their firm solidarity with the Palestinian people, taking to the streets en masse to stand with the people of Palestine against Israeli massacres, invasions and wars. The people of Greece have also taken to their streets in the millions in the past months, and Greek workers risen in escalating general strikes over the past weeks, to stand against an EU/IMF economic austerity plan for their country which will mean misery, subservience, and suffering for Greece's people. read full story / add a comment

Our annual school – the Communist University – takes place in a world in flux. The near hysterical euphoria that surrounded the election of Barack Obama in 2008 has evaporated as US foreign policy is characterised by aggressive continuity – for all the flatulent talk of “change”. Change has come to the Arab world – from below. Millions have risen in defiance of batons and bullets in a revolutionary fight for democracy and freedom. In the UK, we have see the first stirrings of revolt from the trade union movement against austerity and cuts with the gargantuan March 26 demo and talk of coordinated strike action. The movement across the rest of Europe is further advanced. We have seen huge mobilisations in Ireland, Greece and Spain. The battle lines are drawn. read full story / add a comment

Iranian Trade union leader Mansour Osanloo has been freed from prison after four years. Osanloo, chair of the Syndicat of Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company (Sherkat-e Vahed), has been leading workers in their fight for better conditions and for independent unions in Iran. Arrested in July 2007, he was charged with organising “propaganda against the regime” and later accused of being a threat to national security. Throughout his imprisonment he has been subject to horrific abuse. In February 2010 there was an attempt on Osanloo’s life in Rajai-Shahr prison. He was attacked by a former member of the Revolutionary Guards state militia with the support of prison wardens. Two other prisoners intervened and saved him. Later in June 2010 further tragedy hit his family when security forces attacked Zoya Samadi, Osanloo’s daughter-in-law, causing her to miscarry. read full story / add a comment |
