It began on the 15th of May in the form of demonstrations across Spain with an estimated attendance of 150,000. This initial demonstration was organized by a new group called Real Democracy Now (RDN), a loosely organized collective which focused on expressing the feeling of outrage among the Spanish population without recourse to traditional left ideology. read full story / add a comment

The armed power of the Irish state and the local establishment extended a heavily stage-managed and trumped-up 'welcome' for the reigning British monarch, while denying Cork citizens freedom of movement in their own city. Once again An Garda Síochána infringed upon people's freedom of protest. read full story / add a comment

Some readers will be aware that for some time I have been advocating the construction of a cross-union grass roots network. A meeting has been convened tomorrow to discuss such a project. Unfortunately for me (and for any other with similar interests) a conference to discuss Republicanism & Socialism has been scheduled for some time now to take place on the same day. I publish these draft principles for discussion not to promote bureaucracy but with the intention that any such network formed remains a broad and militant organisation, the property of its members and not of one political party or another nor as a sectarian battleground. read full story / add a comment

This Sunday, the international celebration of the working class was marked in Cork with the now-traditional May Day march organised by the Independent Workers Union. Cork WSM also marked the occasion by hosting a pair of talks after the march on May Day-related topics at Solidarity Books on Douglas Street. As a finale to the day's festivities, a fundraising cabaret was held for the union and the bookshop that night at the Spailpín Fánach on South Main Street.

The event, held at Giuseppe Conlon House in Harringay, north London, kicked off at 2pm with information stalls and refreshments, space and time to network with others and music from the Bow Creek Ramblers Old Time String Band. People were also invited to sign a card from the gathering or write an individual letter of Solidarity and support to Bradley Manning. A shrine representing Bradley Manning’s cell was also set up in the front porch of the venue, which was previously a Roman Catholic church. Imagine a free Bradley Manning…

Bob Geldof: Do not choose the side of the Israeli oppressor

Below is an open letter to Bob Geldof regarding the offer he has received of an honorary doctorate from Ben Gurion University in Israel. The IPSC urges Mr. Geldof not to accept this dubious doctorate, for to do so would be aiding in the whitewash of Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people. We would also ask you to send emails to Bob Geldof asking him not to accept this doctorate, at the following mails:

March 21 is the start of the New Year in Iran. IUF, Education International, the International Transport Workers’ Federation (the three international union federations with member organizations in Iran) and the ITUC together send a message of Solidarity to all Iranian Workers fighting for trade union rights and independent unions:

“Today, New Year in Iran, the international trade union movement sends fraternal greetings to you, our sisters and brothers, fighting for basic worker rights against an oppressive regime. For daring to speak out and to exercise your right to form trade unions, to represent and defend your interests and to bargain with employers, Iranian Workers have been sacked, arrested as criminals, tortured and imprisoned. Some, like Kamangar*, have been executed; others await their execution; and the threat of death and possible judicial murder hangs over all those who seek to challenge misery and oppression by organizing at their workplace for collective action.

Last night I went to see Ken Loach/ Paul Lavety's latest effort, the film "Route Irish". I was invited along by a friend, Ben Griffin, who is an Iraq S.A.S. combat veteran.

For most of my anti- war activist life the word "veteran" would conjure images of older guys from my town who had fought in WW2 in New Guinea and also recenlty returned Vietnam Veterans. I grew up sharing a back fence with the second largest military base in Australia - "Gallipoli Barracks"/ Enoggera, Brisbane, Australia. read full story / add a comment
