Since the 1990s, action camps have been taking place under the name ‘No border’ to put focus on the borders that separate people. Regardless of whether the focus has been borders that the state maintains or those that capitalism establishes, the camps have served as autonomous free zones – built by people to bring together all the various fights against borders and migration policies, to share knowledge and experiences and take direct action against an authoritarian society, of which borders are the most visible manifestation.

No Border is no organization but a concept, an idea. It is about fighting for a world without borders, where everyone has the possibility and no one is restricted from moving freely across the globe without ever being called illegal. read full story / add a comment

At the household charges meeting on the 24th March Socialist Democracy distributed leaflets advertising a meeting on the Greek crisis in Dublin at 7-00 on Thursday 5th. We distributed further leaflets at the household charges march on the 31st, only to find that the assembly area was festooned with hurriedly photocopied SWP posters advertising a largely identical meeting at the same time, taking place 100 metres from our venue. read full story / add a comment

"Ethel McDonald: An Anarchist's Story (2006)" Produced and Directed by Mark Littlewood "This drama-documentary tells the story of Ethel MacDonald. A forgotten legend, her story ranks alongside the courage of 'La Pasionaria' and the legendary 'Odette'. Whilst both these women sustained world-wide recognition, our Scots heroine dwindled into obscurity and remains forgotten to this day. Ethel MacDonald's own intimate recollections are presented through a definitive mix of documentary and drama, re-visiting the Killing Fields that were the Spanish Civil War.

Supporting commentary spoken by David Hayman paired with expert interviews, including Noam Chomsky, provides background knowledge of 1930's European Politics and a further insight into the young Scot's motives, actions and social situation. The film links her own personal drama to specific archive footage of Barcelona in disarray - an image Ethel MacDonald came to know so well. " read full story / add a comment

The fiscal treaty, as agreed by EU governments, is clearly an austerity treaty and will impose serious levels of economic and financial pain on Irish Workers for years to come. In his blog ‘Notes On The Front’ Unite economist Michael Taft says “The Government, in signing the Fiscal Treaty, has effectively committed itself to introducing up to €6 billion more in tax increases and spending cuts in the medium-term, over and above what it has already planned”.[1]

The prospect of such an approach is horrific and should shock all of us into action. Unless this is resisted we can expect even further tax increases, wage cuts and a slashing of all public services over the next couple of years. read full story / add a comment

Make your voice heard against war and repression, urges Hands Off the People of Iran chair, Yassamine Mather

The war drums against Iran are beating ever louder. The new embargo on Iranian oil, to come into force on July 1, is only the latest in a long list of measures imposed by US and EU imperialism. It bans all new oil contracts with Iran, and cuts off all existing deals. Also, all of the Iranian central bank’s European assets are to be frozen.

We are told that the sanctions are designed to weaken the regime and “force Iran back to the negotiating table” over its nuclear programme. This is clearly nonsense:

In reality, the ‘nuclear danger’ is used by imperialism as an excuse to deal with an increasingly unstable situation in the Middle East. Imperialism has recently lost a number of friendly regimes in the region (like Egypt) and needs to reassert control in this oil-rich area. War is also a useful distraction from economic misery and the current crisis of capitalism. read full story / add a comment

We strongly condemn Thursday’s massacre at Sirnak in which 36 civilian Kurds were killed by Turkish air strikes. This year more than 4,500 people have been arrested under nebulous “terrorism” charges in Turkey, including dozens of journalists last week. This AKP-directed pogram, known as the KCK Case, began in 2009 against any Kurdish dissent in Turkey. Mayors, local councillors, journalists, human rights activists and Kurdish party Workers are targeted. read full story / add a comment

Ports up and down the West Coast were blockaded, from Seattle to San Diego. The blockade was called in Solidarity with longshore Workers fighting a union-busting assault in Longview, Washington and port truckers seeking union recognition in the ports of Los Angeles/Long Beach. This support should have been greeted. But now the class war on the West Coast docks is coming to a head, and it can't be waged from the outside. Bay Area labor has called for a caravan to Longview. The goal should be a real occupation of the terminal by the Workers to prevent the loading of the scab cargo. Longshore militants have called on the longshore unions to shut down every port on the West Coast, and the East and Gulf Coasts, to smash EGT's union-busting. Can it be done? Yes, but only though sharp struggle against the pro-capitalist labor bureaucracy. read full story / add a comment

Eamonn McCann was born in Derry on the small island of Ireland. He was one of the organizers of the Civil Rights Association (NICRA) at the start of the present troubles. McCann's politics are based on class analysis. He personally participated in many of the critical events in Ireland including the Battle of the Bogside in 1969 and Bloody Sunday in 1972. He writes for the Belfast Telegraph and the Derry Journal, and Hot Press magazine. He is a regular political commentator on the BBC, RTÉ and other broadcast media. He is also Trotskyist and a prominent member of the Socialist Workers Party in Ireland. He is Chairperson of his branch of the National Union of Journalists and Vice-Chairperosn of Derry Trades Council. Being a Trotskyist, i'm sure he won't mind a citizen journalist 'lifting' his following article from the Derry Journal. McCann has been a key part of the Solidarity between the Irish civil rights movement and the Black civil rights movement in the U.S. read full story / add a comment
